I wish it was longer

I just purchased this for my Kindle and was fairly impressed. I've been wanting to see more books on any type of draw poker. This was pretty much a tease to me seeing how it's what, 20 pages? But for $7 you can't go wrong (that's almost a whopping big bet). The "Chapter" is basically Barry talking about what he thinks to be correct play in this intense Korean game of action, and I'm sure it is, though it would've been sweet to have seen some other player's collaborate their styles along side him. Hopefully this will someday be compared to Sklansky on Razz and will return in a longer book of theory by this poker great!

A spotted Dog and a new game of poker

Apparently a badugi is a spotted dog as well one of the newer forms of draw poker. Barry as always emphasizes basing your play on your opponents tendencies. For example he describes drawing to an A27 versus a an early pat hand(and explains how early pats are often weaker) but throws the 7 versus strong 3 card hands and versus loose 3 card hands. The style of the chapter is concise and well written, with the exception of a few strange voices like uses of we versus you or I thrown in. He also asks and answers the core questions like what is a good hand worth? How often am I dealt a badugi?

Is it worthwhile to generate a maniac image to create a `market' for getting calls with 3 card incompletes? Barry seems to think so and describes plays he uses in the game to generate and profit with it.

Last of note for me was his description of a lowball card squeezing play for bluffing which allows him to see the rank of the card and not its suit. If it's the rank he needs he uses it to randomize a bluff. I've never played badugi live(just triple draw) but an interesting inclusion in the next edition(or a larger triple draw book) could be a video of the lowball squeeze.

Overall this is a good addition to any mixed game players library and well worth the price of admission. I give it 4 out 5 stars for now. It's concise and well thought out. Could there more? Yes but this is a good starter, just what is needed for getting to know a new game.

Useful, clean, but missing simulations

You can't fault Barry G for being a math guy, not a computer science guy. His analysis is great. But it's limited to what you can compute with a few probability sums. The strategy he suggests is way too tight. Tighter than Barry himself would play, and tighter than anyone plays in real life. But it's a great guide. Short and well written. If my opponents knew even this much, I'd be in trouble.

The Best Overall Perspective of BPM

In 2004, I worked in a business unit at my company that had experienced a period of declining performance. Our senior management felt that one of the causes was work processes that had become cumbersome and inefficient over the years. I was asked to sponsor a process improvement initiative to try to simplify and streamline how we did work. I didn't know where to start, so I went on a crash course to learn everything I could about improving business processes. I read some great books by Geary Rummler, Roger Burlton, Michael Hammer, and many others. I learned about things like process modeling, process redesign, process improvement, process automation, BPM tools, swimlanes, value chains, CMMI, process owners, Six Sigma, Lean, process architectures--and the role of IT in enabling all of this.

This intense study provided me with a valuable foundation of knowledge, but I still didn't know how pull all of the pieces together. Organizations are extremely complex systems. To improve performance, which approaches work best under which situations? Which tools to use? What skills are needed to improve and redesign processes? What's appropriate, and what's not?

In early 2005, I discovered Business Process Change, First Edition, by Paul Harmon. This book provided me with the big picture perspective of the BPM world that I sorely needed. It helped me to ask the right questions and to structure our process improvement plans more effectively. The issues we have been addressing require long term solutions, and this work continues today. But, we are building an infrastructure that will integrate people and technology into our process change initiatives to ensure the sustainability of our efforts and results.

The First Edition not only helped me organize a more effective process improvement strategy in our business unit, but I also consider the knowledge and perspective gained to be a significant factor in my being selected to lead our relatively new Center for Process Excellence (CPE), a central BPM group located in our corporate offices. The mission of our CPE is to promote a process-based culture throughout our company. We currently lead process improvement and redesign projects to solve specific business problems, and we have begun to develop process modeling skills in our lines of business. We are now focusing on establishing an enterprise business process architecture for our organization and securing executive support for large-scale business transformation.

Thankfully, I now have the Second Edition to consult as we continue on our process journey and take our work to even higher, more ambitious levels. I bought my copy two weeks ago, and while I haven't read it cover-to-cover yet, I have read enough to know that this is not the First Edition with just some cosmetic changes. It is a complete overhaul. It reflects the newest and best thinking in business process change and management today. Like the First Edition, it is a surprisingly clear, practical and useful guide. That's the bottom line for me--what works and how can I use it.

If there was ever a must read book for business process change professionals, this is it.

Disappointing

I really liked the first edition of this book. It has an overall approach plus a toolkit to start a business process redesign project. This second edition have only a very overall approach. It puts together many things not well integrated. It seems the author didn't select the topics, just included it.

Yes, the approach in three level is an interesting framework, but it's not enough for what is missing from the first edition.

It's what it says it is

I'm not a manager, and this book is definitely aimed at management. And a lot of it is aimed at upper management, people who can effect change at the highest levels. Still, if you're looking for a book that will give you a working knowledge of the current buzzwords in the major process re-engineering schools of thought, you can not beat this book for value.

About the Author

X. J. Kennedy , after graduation from Seton Hall and Columbia, became a journalist second class in the Navy (“Actually, I was pretty eighth class”). His poems, some published in the New Yorker, were first collected in Nude Descending a Staircase (1961). Since then he has written six more collections, several widely adopted literature and writing textbooks, and seventeen books for children, including two novels. He has taught at Michigan, North Carolina (Greensboro), California (Irvine), Wellesley, Tufts, and Leeds. Cited in Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations and reprinted in some 200 anthologies, his verse has brought him a Guggenheim fellowship, a Lamont Award, a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, an Aiken-Taylor prize, the Robert Frost Medal of the Poetry Society of America, and the Award for Poetry for Children from the National Council of Teachers of English. He now lives in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he and his wife Dorothy have collaborated on four books and five children.

 

Dana Gioia is a poet, critic, and teacher.  Born in Los Angeles of Italian and Mexican ancestry, he attended Stanford and Harvard before taking a detour into business. After years of writing and reading late in the evenings after work, he quit a corporate vice presidency to write. He has published four collections of poetry, Daily Horoscope (1986), The Gods of Winter (1991), Interrogations at Noon (2001), which won the American Book Award, and Pity the Beautiful (2012); and three critical volumes, including Can Poetry Matter? (1992), an influential study of poetry’s place in contemporary America. Gioia has taught at Johns Hopkins, Sarah Lawrence, Wesleyan (Connecticut), Mercer, and Colorado College. From 2003-2009 he served as the Chairman of the National Endowments for the Arts. At the NEA he created the largest literary programs in federal history, including Shakespeare in American Communities and Poetry Out Loud, the national high school poetry recitation contest. He also led the campaign to restore active literary reading by creating The Big Read, which helped reverse a quarter century of decline in U.S. reading. He is currently the Judge Widney Professor of Poetry and Public Culture at the University of Southern California.

The best English anthology yet, in a form easy to carry

It's the best anthology I've seen in 50 years. It has detailed explanations of all the literary areas it covers, and sample student essays which greatly help freshmen transitioning from high school to college. The 13th edition is a slight but not a significant improvement. I have bought several copies to lend to students still waiting for theirs to arrive. Be sure to get the portable edition, which divides the heavy hard cover book into four paperback books which will save your arm by carrying far less weight to the classroom. These editors make it easy to learn and easy to teach Freshman English, which I have done for ten years. Rental is cheaper, but this is a book you will want to keep.

A very good and thorough textbook.

This textbook gives deep coverage to the areas of short fiction, drama, and poetry. It contains an astounding amount of information. There are quite a number of full stories, poems, and plays--although I have not counted, I would say that the number could be approaching 1000.

The authors have done a great job in selecting writings to illustrate concepts. All of the selected writings are good, in the objective sense--they contain deep meaning. Of course, personal taste is subjective, and my experience was that some of the writings were thoroughly enjoyable, and none were quite intolerable.

There are also questions after pieces of literature to help the reader achieve more insight than they might of their own devices, small sections that offer tips on writing, light biographies and case studies of various authors. Throughout the course I have made lists of various authors I found to be particularly interesting, for further reading on my own time.

This singular textbook was, for the purpose of my class, equivalent to a boxed set which contains each of the treated topics in a separate book. The page numbers corresponded exactly to those of the books in the boxed set. I saved a good bit of money in purchasing this, and I much prefer a single textbook to a clumsy boxed set.

I like this textbook enough that now that my class is done, I am still considering whether to keep it for independent learning or sell it to recoup some of the cost.

Lovely!

Brand new book and it's actually relatively cheap, compared to some other sites and my school. I thought the fiction and drama parts were actually really entertaining, for being something that I had to read for school. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of the poetry part; however, they had a giant variety of poets, including my favorite, so it's forgivable and I think that if you like poetry, then you'd like that section. I haven't read the writing section because my teacher didn't have us read that, but if it's like the rest of the sections, then it's got to be great!

Excellent work! I truly "felt" the love, care and affection that the author was extending to the readers. Well written, well compiled and very professionally put together.

After reading the book, I have decided to:

1. Adopt a correct posture while sleeping
2. Get a new bed
3. Hydrate my body appropriately, and most importantly
4. De-clutter my house and my life.

Practical advice that anyone can do and afford

Dr. Robin delivers a do-able and affordable wellness plan that brings results. Her practical and down-to-earth message is backed up with her chiropractic and wellness credentials and the very real stories of many of her patients and colleagues. She has seen first hand how these simple 7 practices can change lives for the positive. As our nation faces an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, etc., the realities of an unclear national approach to healthcare, and an economy struggling to recover, we need practical resources like "Wellness on a Shoestring" to take matters into our own hands and take back our health!

Our Society is Overfed and Undernourished

Dr. Michelle Robin, D.C., is the director of Your Wellness Connection located in Shawnee Falls, Kansas. Therefore, I approached this book wondering if it was designed as a giant advertisement for her services or if she actually meant what she said - wellness can be affordable.

This book outlines the seven steps that she and her associates take within their practice. Without being too preachy or too spiritual, the reader is shown what your body needs and why in a clear concise way.

It does not take millions to consistently practice the seven behaviors to do well. You have to intentionally set out to put your wellbeing first. In a world where we all take care of others, we have to first take care of ourselves.

This is not a book that is to be followed in a systematic order; the chapters are individual pieces that will create a whole wellness lifestyle that supports vibrant health for human beings.

Sounds good - doesn't it? Let's delve a little deeper.

With each chapter, there are questions to consider - basic how do you feel. OK, that could open up the direction that you need to go and then finishs with a Personal Story that will reinforce what was laid out in the chapter. Followed up with Practical Tips for Your Journey and a Journaling space. Very much an interactive book.

1. Rest, Reflect and Rejuvenate - this chapter focuses on the fun activities that rejuvenate us. That is a good start. For the most part, we do not add enough of this simple ingredient into our life. Stress and lack of sleep are killing us. Wow, I did not realize how many things are related to the lack of sleep. This chapter also goes into spiritual practices that might or might not work for all. Have Fun, Sleep More, Drink Water, Take Vitamins and Go Outside. OK that sounds simple.

2. Breathing. Emotions are intimately connected to breathing. Practice intentional deep breathing. This is a very interesting chapter that you will have to take your time with. If you concentrate on your breathing, you cannot dwell on everything else in your life.

3. Move Your Body. Oh, exercise is the biggest stumbling block. However, she actually uses the word movement, so it does not sound as intimidating. This is an interesting chapter outlining all the physical as well as emotional benefits of just moving your body. This chapter is a little involved and you will have to take your time. Delves into the benefits of Chiropractic care and since this is Dr. Robin's forte that makes sense. Take your time with this step. No need to rush.

4. Free Your Space. Declutter - both mentally and physically. OK, I am 100% behind this one. Simplify and get rid of what you do not need. Clean up your surroundings and feel better.

5. Go for the Greens. Adding more green vegetables to your diet. Greens give cells what they need chemically so that they can function optimally. She claims that bowel inflammation is the primary cause of chronic disease. Never heard that before. A couple of recipes are included to help with incorporating more greens.

6. Eat From the Sea - and Enjoy the Sun. Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin D. There are some warnings in this area so be careful.

7. Drink to Your Health. Water. Shoot, I was hoping for so much more. You should consume half your body weight in ounces. Consuming fluid does not equal hydration. Clear water only, no juice, coffee, tea or soft drinks. Do not drink 30 minutes to 1 hour before a meal because you will dilute acids that you need for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients. Room temperature water is best.

Overall, I thought that this was a very interesting book. As Dr. Robin said, it is a slow process and if you try to do too much too soon, you might give up before you get the full effect.

As she says, not one single change makes you well; it is a combination and a commitment to wellbeing. This is a long commitment 18 to 36 months. That is a long time in this instant gratification society, your body didn't get to where it is overnight so you shouldn't expect it to be healed overnight either.

I do think that I gained knowledge from this book and I do recommend it for adding to your overall wellness.

I am a student who had to read this book and I couldn't understand most of the stuff Shakespeare was writing. We first started to read some other books with the Old English type writing and I got a C- in this class because I couldnt understand it. We just started reading Romeo and Juliet and I had the same problem so I bought this book. Boy, did it help me! I got an A in my class! Another feature which I liked was how the layout is put side-by-side so if you have to read during class, you'll be able to know where everyone is and if you dont understand it, just go to the other side.

Great Kindle Version

I am a high school English teacher looking at the different versions of classics texts available for Kindle (fire), so my review will not be for the play itself, but rather for the eBook--readability, layout, price, and other features.

This version of Romeo and Juliet is my favorite 99 cent version for several reasons. First, there are links to each act and scene. Next, the page layout is clean and easy to read with spaces between each speaker. Finally, the line formatting is in the correct iambic pentameter format, though there are no line numbers. There are no annotations or explanations, but none of the good 99 cent versions provide that either. Bottom line, easy to use!

I tend to enjoy mysteries and history

First let me say that this is not my typical reading fare, I tend to enjoy mysteries and history, but the snippets of Shakespeare I have read over the years have always fascinated me so I thought I would give one of his works a try. I can only say that I love this book, and find myself reading some passages aloud! For me, the annotation is sorely needed, but with it I don't find myself struggling like I remember doing with "Hamlet" 50 years ago in high school.
