Este libro de Daniel Balmaceda, es como otros que hemos le�do, divertid�simo. Mil an�cdotas de la vida argentina y en especial bonaerense. Desde vuelos en globo hasta conspiraciones, desde trajes de batalla hasta m�quinas de hacer llover, damas ad�lteras, asesinos, ladrones, comerciantes y sus negocios, celebraciones curiosas, hasta frases postreras de grandes pr�ceres. Muy divertido. S�lo lamento no conocer m�s la historia y la sociedad argentinas, con lo cual lo podr�a haber gozado a�n m�s. Una delicia de lectura.

hot historical romance

I really enjoyed this story. It was surprisingly sizzling for a historical romance. Loved the brooding and insecure hero and the loving woman who helps heal his heart. It was a short story but, as a previous review stated, a very nice introduction to more related stories to come.

Short & Satisfying

I just started writing these reviews on Amazon and in writing this review I'm faced with my first dilemma- Do I base my reviews on how much I enjoyed the book or do I actually look at the work with a critical eye and review it from an objective perspective?? Since I'm not a professional reviewer and I'm writing these reviews for myself (because I read so darn many Romances I need to keep track of them somehow) I've decided to review straight from the heart. This said I'm a fan of fast paced, no long agonizing separation between the leads, lets get right to the point historical romances. I like it when the main characters immediately get a connection going that is not tested by some silly misunderstanding. I love it when they get to rendezvous for an extended period of time. I also like to read my romances in one setting. This quick little read satisfied these requirements.

The more critical part of me feels that I shouldn't be so generous in doling out a 5 star rating here because it's a pretty basic story. For example I recently read A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deverauz. Now that is a novel that was written with great attention to character creation and dialog. It was very well developed and long and detailed. Suffice it to say that this book will stand the test of time in the hearts of romance readers while The Unlacing of Miss Leigh probably wouldn't be remembered by many except for the 10 or so of us who have reviewed it. BUT....I liked Unlacing WAY more than I did a Knight in Shining Armor. It was more satisfying to me. I identified with the pragmatic heroine who needed to figure out how to make a buck and keep her brother in school. I liked the self-deprecating hero who was realistic about his need to be with a woman and was straight forward in acting on it. I would have loved this book even if it was more expensive but I appreciated that it was under $3 on kindle iphone. On a side note I didn't dislike the cover art but I didn't think it fit. To me the cover art seems a bit erotic while the sex wasn't very detailed. Frankly I wouldn't have minded a bit more kink in there while they were in the getting to know each other stage but I still loved it. If my copy wasn't in digital form I'd put it on my keeper shelf.

A family and a country in turmoil

Pa Chin's "Family" is an excellent, absorbing account of one family in early 20th century China; through the conflicts between the generations, we see the larger conflicts about to engulf the entire country. The family is the Kao clan, five generations living in one complex headed by the Venerable Master Kao, the ultimate autocrat, monarch of all he surveys within his walls, unwilling and unable to admit that his country and his family are changing before his eyes. The story centers around three brothers in the younger generation; Chueh-Hsin, married against his will to a woman chosen for him by his family, stuck in a job he hates, also chosen by his family, trying to navigate through life with his "compliant bow" philosophy which dictates that he must not oppose his elders under any circumstances; Chueh-Min, the second brother, determined to marry the girl he loves despite his family's opposition, and the youngest brother, Chueh-Hui, who sees his family as a ball and chain, loathes everything they represent, and is chafing to break free and live his own life. Pa Chin clearly identifies with Chueh-Hui; he rails against the stifling conformity of Chinese family life, which determines that everyone subordinate their will to the family elders; but in this reviewer's opinion, he doesn't give enough credit to the strengths in the same family life that held Chinese society together for thousands of years. However, this is a minor caveat. "Family" is a totally absorbing account of a family in crisis; on the one hand we sympathize with the bind Chueh-Hsin is caught up in as the oldest son, able to please neither his elders who demand his total compliance with the family traditions nor his younger brothers who need his assistance in their efforts to break free of the confines of those traditions, and on the other hand we empathize with the youngsters' efforts to live their own lives and realize their own destinies. "Family is the classic struggle of the individual vs. the collective good, and the outcome, as seen in the unfolding story of China, is still in doubt.

A Moving and Beautifully Written Book

I read this book for a college class on East Asian History. I don't often enjoy required books, but this was an exception. "Family" filled me with many emotions; while reading it I cried (or would have if I hadn't been in a public library), I was overjoyed, hopeful, despondent. Pa Chin is especially good at showing how his characters influence and are influenced by society. He makes you really care about his characters and believe what they believe. "Family" is a good choice if you like novels that focus on society; for example, "Middlemarch","Vanity Fair", "The Jungle", "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". It is indeed a classic.

An excellent starter-guide to gardening.

Once again, David the Good has inflicted upon the world yet another of his maniacal screeds. Will he ever stop?

I hope not. I've had an interest in gardening my whole life (thanks to my mother and my grandfather.) But I've only recently really gotten into it after a few false starts, and David's books have helped me already. This one will be no different...Winter is Coming.

The book itself is exactly what it purports to be. It's a basic guide to gardening, enough to get you growing in the event of The End Of The World As We Know It. Hopefully, you'll read it and get started before then. The book contains helpful chapters on what to grow, how to grow it, where to find what to grow, and a bit here and there on what to do with what you've grown. It contains a lot of useful information about fertilizers and composting, and his other book, Compost Everything, (which I dubbed "The Necronomicon of Composting") is an excellent companion-guide.

While it is geared towards the survivalist/prepper types, I'd be comfortable giving this book to anyone who had an interest in gardening but no knowledge of the subject. It really is a good book to get people started. Christmas / Hannukah / Favored Winter Holiday is coming up; it's an excellent gift idea.

As usual, it is written in his witty, entertaining, conversational style, which for many people can more intuitive and educational than a dry textbook. As this is the Kindle edition, I'll gladly buy a dead-tree as soon as it is available.

My only complaint is that he did not include a science fiction story within the book so it could be nominated for a Hugo.

Another must-have gardening book

A well written and engaging book on how to garden for survival with the minimum of time and equipment. I'd dock half a star for not mentioning the nutritious and hardy parsnip, but will add that half star back because he refuses to deal with zucchini (if only my neighbors would do the same).
