Influencer--Best 300 pages of Leadership Instruction

Half-way through the book, I bought two more copies to give to friends. It's easy reading, but oh, so powerful! The authors interviewed many different influencers in many different fields. Finding out how people get hardened criminals to change their ways is fascinating! How do you eradicate a disease without concocting any new drugs, or creating any new medical procedures? Simple, just change the way 120 million people do something every day.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is, or wants to be an influencer.

One of the most impactful books I have read this year

"Influencer - The New Science of Leading Change" is one of the most impactful books I have read this year. I have already recommended it to dozens of clients, colleagues and friends. Authors Joseph Grenny, Kerry Patterson, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler have drawn from extensive well of global experience of advising companies and leaders in Change Leadership.

The book is a beautifully crafted weaving together of researched principles regarding Influence and Change, highlighted with gripping vignettes that show examples of how these principles have been applied successful, or misapplied unsuccessfully. The stories make this book breathe.

One of the first and best examples is the story of how an employee at Danny Meyer's Gramercy Tavern in New York City noticed that a female patron was distraught as she entered the restaurant. She had inadvertently left her cell phone and purse in the a. She was in a panic. She did not know whom she was supposed to meet, how she would pay for her meal, or how to retrieve her lost belongings. The host immediately went into superhero mode, helping her to find the group she was to join, assuring her that paying for the meal was the least of his concern. He then asked her for her cell phone number, found someone to man the host desk, and went into problem-solving mode. He spent over 30 minutes calling the woman's cell phone, finally reaching the cab driver, who by this time was far away in the Bronx. The Gramercy employee offered to take a cab uptown to meet the driver half way. He did so, retrieved the lost purse and cell phone, and returned to the restaurant before the woman and her group had finished their meals.

Throughout subsequent chapters, the authors point out specific steps that Mr. Meyer had taken along the way to create an ethos and culture in which this kind of extraordinary customer service is expected to be offered by every employee. This book is not only valuable for business leaders and owners, it also contains many examples of how individuals have applied the principles of influence within families and personal relationships.

I look forward to continuing to learn to apply these principles in my own career and life, and look forward to continue recommending this gem to others.

The authors did a great job of telling stories and providing real world case ...

The Influencer: The Power to Change Anything, really opened my eyes to the necessity of changing individuals behaviors, before being able to implement change. The authors did a great job of telling stories and providing real world case studies in which the reader could relate to the strategies and sources provided. Ensuring people believe the change will be worth it, and what is required can be done is key to initializing change. Utilizing the six sources of influence and implementing them during the change process is key to success in change. I could really relate with this book in my day to day life as well in my coaching career. Reading this book has helped me to step back in my coaching career and look at each individual player and not just the team as a whole. Each one is different, and if I want them to change something, I will have to go about do so differently.

They hacked their way through jungle, forded rivers, and climbed steep mountainsides to escape. Many did not survive the journey. Among these incredible stories was that of Bill Williams, who led refugees out on a herd of elephants. Other civilians who had enjoyed an idyllic colonial lifestyle were ill-equipped for the journey. Setting off with the family silver and their pets, they soon had to abandon all but the essentials in order to survive. Thousands died, but many more crossed the border into India and safety.

About the Author
Felicity Goodall is a writer and broadcaster and the author of five popular history books. She is particularly interested in the human cost of war, and has written on conscientious objection in the First and Second World Wars, and the home front in World War II. She has also written and directed a Radio 4 play about the first woman to be accredited as a war correspondent by the British Army. Her father was conscripted into the Royal Engineers and served in the Burma campaign from 1942-45.

Excellent account of a largely forgotten event.

An excellent coverage of the shambolic civilian evacuation of Burma. Tens of thousands of refugees died attempting to walk from Burma to India during the Japanese invasion of 1942. The British administration was either unable or unwilling to consider that their forces could be defeated by the Japanese and as such did not make any significant plans for a major evacuation of the civilian population of Burma. Indeed the British administration did everything that it could to lull the population into a sense of security and was careful not to admit the possibility of defeat in case it damaged morale. By the time it became apparent that the British army was unable to stop the Japanese invasion the administration was far too disorganised to attempt an orderly evacuation of the civilian population. As a result there were no refugee camps set up on the route to India, what food and rations that were set aside for the refugees were either insufficient or was looted by retreating British and Chinese troops or other refugees. Tens of thousands of refugees descended upon the airstrip at Myitkyina in northern Burma hoping to be flown to safety in India. This lifeline to India was cut when the Japanese forces bombed the airstrip ceasing all further flights. At this point the 40,000 or so refugees trapped in Myitkyina were faced with the prospect of trekking through the Hukawng Valley and over the mountain passes into India. It was soon after the trek through the valley began that the monsoon broke compounding all the other previous difficulties by adding flooded rivers, knee and in some cases thigh deep mud, torrential rain and leeches. There is no record of the thousands that died attempting that passage as their bodies were just left by the side of the road.

The author has collected some fascinating personal accounts of the trial that people went through in attempting to get to India. There is a good amount of background and context to Anglo Burmese society at of the time which serves to highlight the massive trauma that the evacuation caused to the British, Indian and Anglo-Burman refugees. If you are after a military history of the Japanese invasion of Burma then this is not the book for you. The military actions are only described in the context of their impact upon the refugees and the overall course of the invasion. However, if you have an interest in an otherwise largely forgotten part of the WW2 then I'm sure you will enjoy reading this book.

A vey good account of a forgotten part of the British war in SE Asia.
The writer has researched this subject well and been able to obtain information from local Burmese as well as British veterans.
This would make a brilliant WW2 film.

The exodus of British troops and citizens Indians and anyone not wanting to be under Japanese rule as the axis troops moved in. Jungles, swamps, snakes, poison spiders,steep mountain passes , mud, rain, starvation , various disease all faced these heroic people. A must read for those interested in ww2 or an exciting survival story. Very good history with many maps and pictures.

Rare book from a master teacher

In this first decade of the 21st Century, we live in an age of instant gratification. It is no longer an arduous process to acquire the knowledge that for centuries was passed down from guru to disciple under the strictest conditions of qualification and testing on both sides. Today, spiritual seekers everywhere are confounded by so many options that it is difficult to focus on a single path and easy to avoid making a commitment. For many, going to see the latest" enlightened teacher" has become nothing more than a sophisticated form of entertainment. Some seekers even come to question the fundamental principles of the spiritual path, so that it is common nowadays to hear questions such as "Do I really need a guru?" "Do I need to make any effort?" or "Why should practice be necessary when I am already the Self?"

The book by Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, called "Master Key to Self Realization," which has recently been published for the first time outside of India, is a world away from all of this confusion. It is that rarity of rarities, a book that actually delivers what is promised by its title. It is in actual fact the master key to Self realization. However, you must understand that what you are holding in your hands when you pick up this book is a KEY. From one point of view it is all that you need, but, from another point of view, it is only a means. You yourself must take the key and open the door of the house, enter it, and take possesion of it.

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj wrote this book in the complete absence of doubt that came from his own realization. In addition to this, his statements are supported by an absolute confidence in the long tradition of realized Masters to which he belonged. He never had any need to doubt the validity of that tradition or to question its fundamental assumptions. He built on the foundation of understanding that had been passed onto him by his Master, Sri Bhausaheb Maharaj, making new discoveries of his own, but never swerving from the path of devotion to his guru.

The Master Key is not merely a book of knowledge. It is a practical book that contains the method for going beyond both knowledge and ignorance. The method taught in this book is meditation on, and enquiry into, the four bodies of the human being: gross, subtle, causal, and great-causal. It is in this sense a textbook of "Laya Yoga," "laya" meaning the merging of the illusory individual self into the all-pervasive universal Self.

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj began his spiritual search by practicing meditation, but later came to the conclusion that the way of understanding and Self-enquiry (jnana yoga) was a quicker way. However, the practice of meditation remains an important part of his teaching, because meditation is necessary to quieten the restless waters of the mind, which is an essential stage on the journey of Self discovery. Beyond that level of contemplation through meditation (to use his own words), where all remedies recommended by the scriptures are only hindrances, you will see for yourself how you reach the highest point.

I highly recommend this book to all seekers who wish to gain a true understanding of themselves, rather than a superficial understanding through concepts.

Although written a while ago, it still has some good points and a lot of power. One can easily see the chain of teachings Nisargadatta and others picked up on, as presented by Siddharameshwar in this book.

More about management than leadership....

Maybe when this book was written (in the late 1970s) people didn't distinguish management from leadership. I read this book as part of a class on Christian leadership, and though this is recognized as a classic, it was not as good as several other books in that regard.

If you're looking at leadership from a Christian perspective you might consider: Transforming Leadership: Jesus' Way of Creating Vision, Shaping Values & Empowering Change, and Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness 25th Anniversary Edition.

However, if you are really interested in developing management skills for use in a Christian organizational context, this might yet be a good book for you. Just remember, this book is a bit dated in some of it's workplace references....

Successfully Integrates Biblical Thought and Secular Theory

Engstrom has written an excellent book on a topic not many have able to accomplish: how to integrate the Bible with secular theory.
Among the important points Engstrom makes include:
1. What biblical leadership is and is not.
2. A true leader must not be driven for the thirst for power.
3. A mark of maturity is the ability to handle conflict.
4. Suggestions on how to improve your attitude and those who follow you.
5. For a leader to excel, he must find other interests outside his job (family, friends, hobbies, etc.).
6. A leader will be effective when he adopts goal-setting and planning as a personal style of life.
7. Using creative problem-solving.
8. A Christian leader must point others to Christ instead of himself.
Read and be encouraged and challenged to become a better leader!

Engstrom clearly presents Biblical strategies for improving management and human relations. Every Christian leader should have this book on the shelf.

The network is everywhere. At the office, machines are wired together into local area networks, and the local networks are interconnected via the Internet. At home, personal computers are either intermittently connected to the Internet, or, increasingly, "always-on" cable and DSL modems. New wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, promise to vastly expand the network realm, embracing everything from cell phones to kitchen appliances. Such an environment creates tremendous opportunities for innovation. Whole new classes of applications are now predicated on the availability of high-bandwidth, always-on connectivity. Interactive games allow players from around the globe to compete on virtual playing fields and the instant messaging protocols let them broadcast news of their triumphs to their friends. New peer-to-peer systems, such as Napster and Gnutella, allow people to directly exchange MP3 audio files and other types of digital content. The SETI@Home project takes advantage of idle time on the millions of personal computers around the world to search for signs of extraterrestrial life in a vast collection of cosmic noise. The ubiquity of the network allows for more earthbound applications as well. With the right knowledge, you can write a robot that will fetch and summarize prices from competitors' Web sites; a script to page you when a certain stock drops below a specified level; a program to generate daily management reports and send them off via e-mail; a server that centralizes some number-crunching task on a single high-powered machine, or alternatively distributes that task among the multiple nodes of a computer cluster. Whether you are searching for the best price on a futon or for life in a distant galaxy, you'll need to understand how network applications work in order to take full advantage of these opportunities. You'll need a working understanding of the TCP/IP protocol--the common denominator for all Internet-based communications and the most common protocol in use in local area networks as well. You'll need to know how to connect to a remote program, to exchange data with that program, and what to do when something goes wrong. To work with existing applications, such as Web servers, you'll have to understand how the application-level protocols are built on top of TCP/IP, and how to deal with common data exchange formats such as XML and MIME. This book uses the Perl programming language to illustrate how to design and implement practical network applications. Perl is an ideal language for network programming for a number of reasons. First, like the rest of the language, Perl's networking facilities were designed to make the easy things easy. It takes just two lines of code to open a network connection to a server somewhere on the Internet and send it a message. A fully capable Web server can be written in a few dozen lines of code. Second, Perl's open architecture has encouraged many talented programmers to contribute to an ever-expanding library of useful third-party modules. Many of these modules provide powerful interfaces to common network applications. For example, after loading the LWP::Simple module, a single function call allows you to fetch the contents of a remote Web page and store it in a variable. Other third-party modules provide intuitive interfaces to e-mail, FTP, net news, and a variety of network databases. Perl also provides impressive portability. Most of the applications developed in this book will run without modification on UNIX machines, Windows boxes, Macintoshes, VMS systems, and OS/2. However, the most compelling reason to choose Perl for network application development is that it allows you to fully exploit the power of TCP/IP. Perl provides you with full access to the same low-level networking calls that are available to C programs and other natively compiled languages. You can create multicast applications, implement multiplexed servers, and design peer-to-peer systems. Using Perl, you can rapidly prototype new networking applications and develop interfaces to existing ones. Should you ever need to write a networking application in C or Java, you'll be delighted to discover how much of the Perl API carries over into these languages.

This Book's Audience Network Programming with Perl is written for novice and intermediate Perl programmers. I assume you know the basics of Perl programming, including how to write loops, how to construct if-else statements, how to write regular expression pattern matches, the concept of the automatic $_ variable, and the basics of arrays and hashes. You should have access to a Perl interpreter and some experience writing, running, and debugging scripts. Just as important, you should have access to a computer that is connected both to a local area network and to the Internet! Although the recipes in Chapter 10 on setting Perl-based network servers to start automatically when a machine is booted do require superuser (administrative) access, none of the other examples require privileged access to a machine.

This book does take advantage of the object-oriented features in Perl version 5 and higher, but most chapters do not assume a deep knowledge of this system. Chapter 1 addresses all the details you will need as a casual user of Perl objects.

This book is a thorough review of the TCP/IP protocol at the lowest level, or a guide to installing and configuring network hubs, routers, and name servers. Many good books on the mechanics of the TCP/IP protocol and network administration are listed in the references in Appendix D. Roadmap This book is organized into four main parts, Basics, Developing Cients for Common Services, Developing TCP Client/Server Systems, and Advanced Topics. Part I, Basics, introduces the fundamentals of TCP/IP network communications.

Chapters 1 and 2, Networking Basics and Processes, Pipes, and Signals, review Perl's functions and variables for input and output, discuss the exceptions that can occur during I/O operations, and use the piped filehandle as the basis for introducing sockets. These chapters also review Perl's process model, including signals and forking, and introduce Perl's object-oriented extensions. Chapter 3, Introduction to Berkeley Sockets, discusses the basics of Internet networking and describes IP addresses, network ports, and the principles of client/server applications. It then turns to the Berkeley Socket API, which provides the programmer's interface to TCP/IP. Chapters 4 and 5, The TCP Protocol and The IO::Socket API and Simple TCP Applications, show the basics of TCP, the networking protocol that provides reliable stream-oriented communications. These chapters demonstrate how to create client and server applications and then introduce examples that show the power of technique as well as some common roadblocks.

Part II, Developing Clients for Common Services, looks at a collection of the best third-party modules that developers have contributed to the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN).

Chapter 6, FTP and Telnet, introduces modules that provide access to the FTP file-sharing service, as well as to the flexible Net::Telnet module which allows you to create clients to access all sorts of network services. E-mail is still the dominant application on the Internet, and Chapter 7, SMTP: Sending Mail, introduces half of the equation. This chapter shows you how to create e-mail messages on the fly, including binary attachments, and send them to their destinations. Chapter 8, POP, IMAP, and NNTP: Processing Mail and Netnews, covers the other half of e-mail, explaining modules that make it possible to receive mail from mail drop systems and process their contents, including binary attachments. Chapter 9, Web Clients, discusses the LWP module, which provides everything you need to talk to Web servers, download and process HTML documents, and parse XML.

Part III, Developing TCP Client/Server Systems--the longest part of the book--discusses the alternatives for designing TCP-based client/server systems. The major example used in these chapters is an interactive psychotherapist server, based on Joseph Weizenbaum's classic Eliza program.

Chapter 10, Forking Servers and the inetd Daemon, covers the common type of TCP server that forks a new process to handle each incoming connection. This chapter also covers the UNIX and Windows inetd daemons, which allow programs not specifically designed for networking to act as servers. Chapter 11, Multithreaded Applications, explains Perl's experimental multithreaded API, and shows how it can greatly simplify the design of TCP clients and servers. Chapters 12 and 13, Multiplexed Operations and Nonblocking I/O, discuss the select() call, which enables an application to process multiple I/O streams concurrently without using multiprocessing or multithreading. Chapter 14, Bulletproofing Servers, discusses techniques for enhancing the reliability and maintainability of network servers. Extraordinarily useful book

This book, replete with code, is one of the most useful resources I've come across. There aren't just code snippets here -- there are complete and useful programs, with explanations for each line of code. These line-by-line explanations not only make the code crystal clear, but it demonstrates how you can adapt the code to suit your specific need.
It discusses the esoteric topics such as threading, sockets, parsing binary email attachments, and more in a very understandable and open fashion. It also discusses existing modules and their "hidden" usefulness (Hint: Net::Telnet can be used to SSH). The author is to be commended on his ability to make these cryptic topics understood.
When I first flipped through Network Programming with Perl, I immediately found the solution to a problem I was having for the previous few days. A few more moments, I saw solutions to problems that associates were having. It's not very often a single book can do that without a thorough reading, but this one came through brilliantly.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone serious about taking their Perl expertise to the next level.

Great coverage of network programming if you use perl

This book has excellent coverage of forking, multithreading, multiplexing, and non-blocking IO. Good coverage of this material is hard to find. Most books just concentrate on specific protocols such as POP, IMAP, FTP, SMTP, etc. This book also covers that material, but unlike other books, this one will actually start you off understanding sockets, pipes and signals rather than just showing you how to to use a bunch of libs. There is plenty of example source code here too.

Everything you need to know on Network Programming

This book has been in my wish list for pretty long time, and before I actually buy it decided to check it out of my school's library. Enjoyment started at the first chapters of the book that I read in the library's caffeteria. The book definitely covers all the aspects of the Network Progamming, not only with Perl, but in general as well.
In the first chapters of the book, Lincoln Stein makes good use of such OO modules as IO::File and IO::Socket to demostrate that difference between local file operations and remote network programming isn't that much different at all ( at least in Perl ).
Chapter 2 shows you several applications that are built on pipes. The best thing about the chapter was the signals part, where L. Stein shows examples, catching all sorts of signals that your progam receives and reacts accordingly. One example was reacting to pressing of CTRL+C sequence of keys to terminate the progam.
I would call Chapter 3 the heart of the book, since it goes over Berkeley Sockets, the base for Network progamming in most systems, no matter what progamming language you tend to prefer. It also explains thoroughly Sockets Addressings, Network naming conventions, protocols, services and a lot more. This chapter, together with the Chapter 4 alone are worth the whole price of the book, I believe. The chapter in the end goes over some common netwook analysis tools, such as "nslookup", "ping", so on and so forth.
Chapter 4 tells you all you need about TCP Protocol. Shows several examples as well. Goes over Adjusting Socket options, and their uses.
Chapter 5 is not anything newer supposing you've been following all the pervious chapters. Untill this chapter, L. Stein demonstrates the coding using much low level Socket API. here Lincoln starts using IO::Socket's Object Oriented Interface for its handy functionalities that enable writing Networking applications more relieving.
Chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9 takes you through writing several commong network clients such as SMTP/mailing clients, Telnet, FTP clients. Also provides their complete source codes in case you just feel likek copying them. Chapter 9 gets into the most fun part: LWP and HTML/XML Parsing. Spends good 50 pages on those. Very exciting indeed!
The rest of the book (another half) is dedicated for writing Server applications, which I haven't read. I am sure the rest is as exciting as it's been up to this point. But no matter what, I am greatefull to the book for such an exciting and informative coverage of the topics. It's worth every penny that you spend on it. Buy it!
