About the Author

Anna Leon-Guerrero is a professor of sociology at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. A recipient of the university’s Faculty Excellence Award and the K. T. Tang Award for Excellence in Research, she teaches courses on statistics, sociological theory, and social problems. As a social service program evaluator and consultant, she has focused her research on welfare reform, employment strategies for the working poor, and program assessment. She is the coauthor of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society and Essentials of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society (with Chava Frankfort-Nachmias).

Pretty Basic

This text was a little too elementary for my taste, even for an introduction to sociology. Many nonmajor undergraduates are interested in social topics and would enjoy a more sophisticated presentation. I do not think that Sage is the best publisher for academic texts in terms of quality, but the website resources were useful without being overwhelming. I did enjoy the fact that this text was neither too dense nor too long--but it could have been even more brief.

Seriously- this book is absolutely amazing, eye opening and for some parts jaw dropping. The writer did a superb job at writing and explaining in a easy text way to understand. Alot of authors tend to be bias in books they write, however Im still not certain which side this author lies with because he writes a very neutral viewpoint. He did however mention a personal experience relating to the statistics of the information on the topic but he did a fabulous job and this book should seriously be a mandatory read in high school. Loved this read...

A thrilling ride from the streets of Gluckstadt, Germany to the supernatural harvests in Africa!

Taking into account just raw numbers, Reinhard Bonnke is probably the most successful evangelist of our life-time. Reading this book gives us an engrossing overview of his remarkable life.

This autobiography is filled with heartwarming personal memoires, dramatic events, headline-grabbing miracles, beautiful testimonies, accounts of meetings with kings, presidents and rulers of nations, lessons learned and and even just some fun, lightweight anekdotes. We read how the often explosive political climates in Africa affected the ministry and led Reinhard and his team into sometimes life-threatening situations.

Although we know Reinhard Bonnke for his famous gospel crusades throughout Africa with attendance often exceeding more than one million people, his beginnings were humble and small.

When he was 11 years old he evangelized on the street corners of Glückstadt and was overjoyed to see for the first time a soul saved. God spoke to him when he was 8 years that he would be send to Africa, but a lot of people around him, including his father (who was a preacher) and family members did not acknowledge his calling. In many ways he was considered socially a 'zero'. Pentecostals were looked down upon in Lutheran Germany, his brothers looked down upon the occupation of their father and found it foolish that Reinhard wanted to be a preacher. When he eventually came to Africa he initially found little support for his ministry.

But God took him through a personal training through a series of events that would repeatedly break the mold of his thinking. Theological barriers were broken, denominational barriers were broken and natural barriers were broken. God gave him a vision of a blood-washed Africa and this vision has remained the driving purpose of his life. Always seeking and knocking for new opportunities to bring the Gospel in new and grander ways for maximum impact. The tents grew bigger until no tent could ever hold the crowds. The technological tools and equipment that were used grew more advanced and left nothing to chance. The crusades were headline news everywhere they came.

Besides his unstoppable desire to fulfill his life-time mission, one of the things that strikes me most about his life is his simplicity and pureness. Although his ministry has impacted the history and courses of whole nations and generations, there always remains this often boyish and feisty sheen in his personality and the complete dependence on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. From the outside he is changing the course of world-history, from the inside we read how he cries out to God for help how to handle the situations he faces.

Besides that, he never lost the ability to value the life of one soul. Every life is valuable, because Jesus paid the highest price for that one individual.

The book is full of lessons in faith and what gets clear from every page, is that Bonnke is actually a normal, ordinary man, whose secret of success is just in simple obedience to the voice of the Lord.

What God did through Bonnke, *GOD* did through Bonnke. And since it's *GOD* that does the impossible while Bonnke simply acts in obedience, it becomes clear that God can do miraculous things through anybody that simply chooses to obey.

One might argue that some stories in the book could've been skipped (nice to know that he loves to ride a bicycle, but the book could've done without a complete chapter about the subject). Sometimes Bonnke unnecessarily repeats some of the events in different parts of the book. But this style actually fits the man. It never pretends to be top-literature or anything more than amusing and faith-inspiring prose that anybody can read. And as just that, it succeeds marvelously and it will give you some lessons in history, politics, culture and ministry in the process.

One last remark: some of the stories in this book were also collected in the book 'Even Greater'. So if you read this book, you can skip that one.

Absolutely Great!

I'm reading this on my Kindle for the third time! I also have the Hardback version which has beautiful pictures of the revival Bonnke led in Africa and other parts of the world.. However, the Kindle version (which doesn't seem to be available anymore) doesn't weigh anything and is easy to take with me and get inspired over and over by his life story. I find myself deep in prayer each time I read this book. Oh, the FAITH Bonnke has! He doesn't let anything stop him from listening and obeying God's voice. Very inspiring and touching. I read this book when I feel as if I am needing to be closer to God and God feels far away. Sure enough, my faith and 'courage to continue' this Good Fight of Faith is restored as I read and dwell on the Insights of Bonnke.

I feared I would get to the end of this book, and I did. The ministry of Evangelist Bonnke is the embodiment of the Great Commission which Christ extended to all who believe on him. We serve a true and living Savior whose love for the world knows no bounds and whose power is limitless to transform our world. Thanks for the reminder and the challenge to spread the gospel. The music is obviously 5 stars, and if you're on this page, you know that.

The book is close. There was obviously great care put into put into the quality of the materials and the layout of the sheet music. People who have played Glass in the past have been challenged by getting lost in the repetition, but big numbered sections make this easy to read and work with.

If I could give 4.5 stars, I would. However, I'd have preferred a spiral bound option and bigger title sections for each etude.

This is fun because finally the etudes are available

This is fun because finally the etudes are available. I used to have to try to find them online in some sort of weird file sharing sheet music thing, and people would just be all like not even trying to share stuff, or like asking me to like hella give them a bunch of like sheet music that I didn't even have.

Viswa Viswanathan

Viswa Viswanathan is an associate professor of Computing and Decision Sciences at the Stillman School of Business in Seton Hall University. After completing his PhD in artificial intelligence, Viswa spent a decade in academia and then switched to a leadership position in the software industry for a decade. During this period, he worked for Infosys, Igate, and Starbase. He embraced academia once again in 2001. Viswa has taught extensively in fields ranging from operations research, computer science, software engineering, management information systems, and enterprise systems. In addition to teaching at the university, Viswa has conducted training programs for industry professionals. He has written several peer-reviewed research publications in journals such as Operations Research, IEEE Software, Computers and Industrial Engineering, and International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education. He has authored a book titled Data Analytics with R: A hands-on approach. Viswa thoroughly enjoys hands-on software development, and has single-handedly conceived, architected, developed, and deployed several web-based applications. Apart from his deep interest in technical fields such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, computer science, and software engineering, Viswa harbors a deep interest in education, with special emphasis on the roots of learning and methods to foster deeper learning. He has done research in this area and hopes to pursue the subject further. Viswa would like to express deep gratitude to professors Amitava Bagchi and Anup Sen, who were inspirational forces during his early research career. He is also grateful to several extremely intelligent colleagues, notable among them being Rajesh Venkatesh, Dan Richner, and Sriram Bala, who significantly shaped his thinking. Shanthi Viswanathan

Shanthi Viswanathan is an experienced technologist who has delivered technology management and enterprise architecture consulting to many enterprise customers. She has worked for Infosys Technologies, Oracle Corporation, and Accenture. As a consultant, Shanthi has helped several large organizations, such as Canon, Cisco, Celgene, Amway, Time Warner Cable, and GE among others, in areas such as data architecture and analytics, master data management, service-oriented architecture, business process management, and modeling. When she is not in front of her Mac, Shanthi spends time hiking in the suburbs of NY/NJ, working in the garden, and teaching yoga. Shanthi would like to thank her husband, Viswa, for all the great discussions on numerous topics during their hikes together and for exposing her to R and Java. She would also like to thank her sons, Nitin and Siddarth, for getting her into the data analytics world.

There are better options

Packt's Indian roots and willingness to publish anything, on one hand, and India's vast supply of English-speaking IT specialists, on the other hand, have been a dangerous combination: burned by several disasters in book form, I was opening "R Data Analysis Cookbook" with some trepidation. In the event, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a below-average-quality but decent book, which supplements familiar "standards", done by other books, with original material, e.g. when it discusses calling R from Java, or uses RgoogleMaps package. I would guess a 50/50 split of the page count between (a) machine-learning/"data science" methods and (b) "everything else", primarily data manipulation and visualization. My concern is that the latter is not sufficiently substantial to make up for the fact that on the former, "R Data Analysis Cookbook" is weak, whether viewed in isolation or compared against other titles. I would not recommend the purchase, and suggest "R in Action" by Kabacoff - a high-quality R introduction with a substantial statistics-and-machine-learning component - of the heftier and more expensive "R Book" by Crowley as superior alternatives.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

good R book with succinct code and clear explanations

The R Data Analysis Cookbook offers succinct examples on a variety of data analysis topics including vectorized operations, using the apply / lapply / sapply family of functions, exploratory data analysis, classification, regression, data reduction techniques and geospatial analysis. I enjoyed the sections that dealt with using shiny and the various treatments of regression techniques. I thought the section that covered time series analysis was well done overall, and would have liked to have seen the authors expand upon that topic in more detail, though I understand that space must have been somewhat constrained given the number of topics this volume addresses.

Of the various books about R and data analysis, this one hits the road running. It is primarily focused on data analysis using R (in that order). To do so, it assumes that you know what you want to get done with data analysis and provides recipes to get you started with various tasks to do data analysis.

That said, it does not provide information about R language features or explain how a specific analysis technique works. For such information, you will have to look elsewhere such as "Art of R Programming" and "Machine Learning: An Algorithmic Perspective".

About the Author
Craig M. Wright received his Bachelor of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in 1966 and his Ph.D. in musicology from Harvard University in 1972. He began his teaching career at the University of Kentucky and for the past 40 years has been teaching at Yale University, where he is the Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music as well as Director of Online Education. He teaches his perennially popular introductory course "Listening to Music", also part of the offerings of Open Yale Courses, and his selective seminar "Exploring the Nature of Genius". The author of numerous scholarly books and articles on composers ranging from Leoninus to Bach, Dr. Wright has also received many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Einstein and Kinkeldey Awards of the American Musicological Society, and the Dent Medal of the International Musicological Society. In 2004 he was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Chicago, and in 2010 he was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, joining fellow inductee banjo player Steve Martin. Dr. Wright has also published LISTENING TO MUSIC, CHINESE EDITION (Cengage Learning/Three Union Press, 2012), translated and simplified by Profs. Li Xiujung (China Conservatory, Beijing) and Yu Zhigang (Central Conservatory, Beijing), both of whom worked with Wright at Yale; LISTENING TO MUSIC and LISTENING TO WESTERN MUSIC, Seventh Editions (Cengage Learning, 2015); and MUSIC IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION, MEDIA UPDATE (Cengage Learning, 2010) with coauthor Bryan Simms. He is presently at work on a volume titled MOZART'S BRAIN: EXPLORING THE NATURE OF GENIUS.

Bryan R. Simms (Bachelor of Arts, Yale University, 1966; Ph.D., Yale University, 1971) has taught since 1976 at the University of Southern California, where he has been director of graduate studies and is currently chair of the department of musicology. He is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Fulbright Foundation. He is the author of books and articles on topics in twentieth-century music and music theory, including MUSIC OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (Schirmer 1996) and, most recently, THE ATONAL MUSIC OF ARNOLD SCHOENBERG, 1908-1923 (Oxford University Press).

good questions with lots of pictures

I think this is a great pathology review book. Although the explanations to the questions are not as in depth as Robbin's review question book, the thing that separates this book from Robbins is the amount of pictures it has. One of my biggest weaknesses is histology pictures, and this book definitely has plenty. Overall, A great resource to use throughout medical school.

Great for class!

This question review book is meant to be used with Ruben's Pathology, but I used it with little Robbins and thought it was fantastic. The full-color photos are great, and every question has a very in-depth description for the answer. It is very good for basic pathology, but I would not recommend it as a board-review book, as it is a little too focused on specific details (molecular pathways, specific chemical mediators not otherwise mentioned) for that purpose.

Artists who arrive fully formed at a young age always dazzle, and Francesca Woodman was one of the most gifted and dazzling artist prodigies in recent history. In 1972, the 13-year-old Woodman made a black-and-white photograph of herself sitting at the far end of a sofa in her home in Boulder, Colorado. Her face is obscured by her hair, light radiates from an unseen source behind her out at the viewer through her right hand. This photograph typifies much of what would characterize Woodman's work to come: a semi-obscured female form merging with or flailing against a somewhat bare and often dilapidated interior. In an oeuvre of around 800 photographs made in just nine years, Woodman performed her own body against the textures of wallpaper, door frame, baths and couches, radically extending the Surrealist photography of Man Ray, Hans Bellmer and Claude Cahun and creating a mood and language all her own. In the 30 years since her untimely death, Woodman has gained a following among successive generations of artists and photographers, a testament to her work's undeniable immediacy and enduring appeal Amid a renewed intensification of interest in Francesca Woodman, this volume is published for a major touring exhibition of her photographs and films at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim. Containing many previously unpublished photographs, it is the definitive Francesca Woodman monograph.
Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) was born in Denver, Colorado, to the well-known artists George and Betty Woodman. In 1975 she attended the Rhode Island School of Design, and in 1979 she moved to New York, to attempt to build a career in photography. In 1981, at the age of 22, she committed suicide.

About the Author

Elisabeth Bronfen is professor of English and American studies at the University of Zurich and the Global Distinguished Professor of German at New York University. She is the author of several books, including, most recently, "Night Passages: Philosophy, Literature, and Film."

Compares Favorably with 2006 Phaidon Book in Five Ways, But Unfavorably in Nine Ways

Francesca Woodman was a photographer who committed suicide in 1981 at the age of 22. The dust jacket blurb of this book says in part "Produced in conjunction with the first major American exhibition of the artist's work in more than two decades [at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and at New York's Guggenheim Museum], this catalog is a landmark reconsideration of Woodman for the twenty-first century." I'll compare it with the 2006 book published by Phaidon that is also titled "Francesca Woodman".

Here is a list of five ways in which this book compares favorably with the Phaidon book: (1) The inside of the dust jacket has a cool reproduction of the right part of the diazotype entitled "Caryatid, New York, 1980." See Customer Image. (2) The paper is an elegant off-white color, instead of the harsh white of Phaidon. (3) The reproductions of the prints are at the original size whenever possible, as opposed to Phaidon which reproduces some photos larger and some photos smaller than the originals. See Customer Image. (4) The four essays on pages 166-213 are together better than the Phaidon book's 66-page essay "Scattered in Space and Time" by Chris Townsend which rambles considerably. For me, the most interesting essay (because it didn't overlap much with essays in other books on Woodman) was "The Geometry of Time: Some Notes on Francesca Woodman's Video" on pages 196-203. (5) I didn't do an exact count, but approximately one-third of this book's 180 photos are not found in the Phaidon book. (In fact, the dust jacket blurb says that this book has "many previously unpublished photographs," although inside the book one cannot tell which photos have or have not been published before.) Some of the not-in-Phaidon photos grab your attention, like the one on page 101 showing the back of a woman with a brooch somehow attached to her palm (which is reproduced on the back of the dust jacket), or like the one on pages 162-163 in which Woodman poses nude in front of her birth certificate.

Here is a list of nine ways in which this book compares unfavorably with the Phaidon book: (1) This book has only four mostly-small images from Woodman's early work (1972-1975, such as "Self-Portrait at Thirteen"). The Phaidon book has early work on pages 23 and 75-83. (2) The reader cannot appreciate the sequencing of the pages in the two artists' books "Portrait of a Reputation" and "Some Disordered Interior Geometries." The 2006 Phaidon book contained thumbnail images of the entire two books on pages 236-239. (3) The photos on pages 69 and 100 are clearly related to each other, having been shot against the same wall, and involving dirt on the model's body. It is unclear why they are not on the same page spread. Same goes for the photos on pages 68 and 86, and on pages 78 and 98 (both from "Several Cloudy Days"). (4) Some of the 180 thumbnail-size photos in the "Catalogue of the Exhibition" on pages 204-219 are not reproduced at a larger size elsewhere in the book. (5) Some of the 180 photos in the "Catalogue of the Exhibition" are reproduced at a larger size in the "Essays" section, but the catalogue does not specify the pages. For example, a larger version of #2 is found on page 178, #24 ("Polka Dots") on p.168, #14 on p.189, #46 ("Directing Lightning #1") on p.176, #71 on p.186, and #176 on p.177. See Customer Image. (6) The Phaidon book has some memorable photos not found in this book, for example the one in which Woodman is holding the object that looks like a fish skeleton behind her back (Phaidon p.194). (7) The Phaidon book's postcards, studies (sketches), extracts from Woodman's journal, and "To Tell The Truth" essay by Woodman's friend give interesting insights into Woodman's methods. (8) Although the bibliography contains more recent articles than the Phaidon book, it also excludes some older articles that the Phaidon book has. (9) There is no index.

In summary, if you want to learn about this fascinating photographer, buy both this book and the Phaidon book from Amazon.com!

Inside a Darkened Mind

Francesca Woodman (1958 - 1981) is one of those artists whose potential was never realized fully - she died, the result of suicide, in 1981 at the age of 22. But the images she created with the camera continue to haunt the viewer and this portfolio puts it all together very well. Woodman's small photographs deal with the feminine mystique, an acceptable way of describing the strange poses she created with women models - including herself. There is a flavor here of surrealism (especially in the image f a seated girl with a handing mirage of a feminine body nearby.

It is difficult to grasp the degree of creativity necessary to create some 800 images in the course of the nine years during which she embraced her art. These images are not suggestive of Dorothea Lange or Diane Arbus, but they tend to have the same sort of response from the viewer - intense reality that becomes surreal in the context in which the statement is made. Her language is definitely her own, a mixture of dark motifs, sinister atmospheres, the use of 'sets' that are well worn interiors with the accompanying used and abused accouterments, and a sense of alienation, likely not dissimilar form the fragile mind state at her demise.

The book is a well-designed catalogue with sensitive essays and the largest collection of the works of this fascinating photographer artist that has been published. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, February 12

This is again a very psychological photographic book of francesca woodman. she was a young gifted photographer and her work is amazingly good. the books is a piece of art.
