Plenty of Food for Thought
By JamesMcRitchie
Just about all modern maladies are tied to inflammation. Michelle Babb has created a wonderful little cookbook with the usual gorgeous photos of food but these dishes are based on wholesome ingredients, not food porn. Get away from comfort food based on nostalgia and focus instead on foods correlated with reducing depression and fatigue.

Although I have been vaguely familiar with the American diet as a source of inflation, the gut brain connection and the many benefits of a healthy diet, Babb brings these concepts home in a non-preachy cookbook. Instead of mind-altering drugs that can be a little to powerful and harsh, maybe its time to try mind-altering foods.

I'd like to see expanded tables describing the mind-altering components many more food -- missing here are some of my favorites like blueberries, wild rice and persimmons, but I guess that would be a different book.

Plenty of food for thought.

Misses the mark
By jennithomson
I am a big fan of Michelle Babb's first cookbook. You really can't go wrong with any of her recipes. But this cookbook seemed to lose the balance between taste and nutrition that her first one held so well. Many of these recipes are bland or downright disgusting (breakfast scramble, for example). I will keep exploring it, but definitely hope that she's able to return to the magic of the first book.

Compact City: the next urban evolution in response to climate change, by Thomas L. Saaty

We need to control nature by eliminating its capricious threats to our lives. We do it best by not only making our living, working , sports and other leisure structures more accessible in space, but also by minimizing and banishing congestions and the need for long times to commute to work or to access shopping malls, sports and cultural activities. With the threat of global warming and melting of the polar ice cap in the Antarctic, low lying cities throughout the world are threatened with drowning under more than 150 feet of water. What should we be thinking about insulating ourselves from natural threats like hurricanes and tsunamis and earthquakes? Surprisingly enough, the new design will eliminate one of the problems of poverty, the lack of shelter.

An outstanding imagining of the future of our cities
By MEH
Dr. Saaty thoughtfully and carefully examines the current state of our cities while presenting an imaginative argument in an effort to transform cities into green spaces while preserving their urbanity. Taking into account both the preservation of green space and elements of an urban environment, Saaty re-imagines how we can better utilize urban space to fit the needs of our ever-changing climate and eliminate threat from natural disasters. Compact City draws the reader in with its vivid descriptions of city transformations. As a reader, one is able to imagine every day life in the transformed city. Furthermore, Compact City opens the door for the reader to visualize interactions with others, as the city Saaty describes encompasses an element of human interaction that is currently lacking in our urban environments. What would it be like to create spaces where more interaction takes place? The advantages that this city layout provides are vast and allows the reader's imagination to run wild.

thinking outside the urban box
By egs96
A frank discussion about urban planning and development, Compact City is compelling in its concern for the present state and impact of our urban dwellings on the environment, our health, our quality of life, and optimistic about expectations for their future design. Compact City discusses the need to develop cities collaboratively, creatively, holistically rather than piecemeal and reactively as has been historically the case. These new "compact" cities will serve not only to mediate the many negative effects addressed in the book (such as carbon footprints, economic disparities, and commute time to name just a few) but will actually enhance our living experiences and be easy to modify. The book does not shy away from the complexity of the decision processes required to design and build environmentally friendly, culturally and biologically diverse, interactive and exciting new cities. Instead, an otherwise technical discussion of decision making methodologies is made accessible to the reader through colorful illustrations and examples as well as some basic psychology about decision making. The final product is "Compact City," a good book, and an even better place to live!

Reverse Sprawl
By Michael H.
So much conversation and study has taken place over the past 100 years regarding the urban sprawl, or the journey outward from major metropolitan areas. This has created the need for more transit options, larger and longer highways, more shopping centers, and mostly a reliance on Single Occupant Vehicles. Now, more than ever, people are spending days alone in their cars every month simply commuting to and from work. We need to re-focus and people need to see how great of an impact their decisions, and this urban sprawl, has had on our environment but also on our lives.
With Dr. Saaty's introduction of major cities being built all as one, we would be able to centralize our lives, removing so much of the stresses that are caused by commuting/travel. In addition the planet would be better off, with self-sustaining practices working best when everyone can take a part of it in one area. Personal health should increase as well as mental health- leading to a happier society in which to live!!

A Dignified Life: The Best Friendsâ„¢ Approach to Alzheimer's Care: A Guide for Care Partners, by Virginia Bell MSW, David Troxel M

More than 5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease or a related form of dementia. By the year 2030, experts estimate that as many as 66 million people around the world will be faced with this life-altering disease. Unfortunately, these staggering statistics impact millions of caregivers, too. Compared with all types of caregivers, those who assist someone with dementia experience the highest levels of burnout, depression, poor health, and premature death. A Dignified Life, Revised and Expanded offers hope and help with a proven approach.

Ten years ago, the first edition of A Dignified Life changed the way the caregiving community approached Alzheimer's disease by showing caregivers how to act as a Best Friend to the person, finding positive ways to interact even as mental abilities declined. Firmly grounded in the latest knowledge about the progression and treatment of dementia, this expanded edition offers a wealth of immediately usable tips and new problem-solving advice. It incorporates practical ideas for therapeutic activities―including the latest brain-fitness exercises―stimulate the brain while adding structure, meaning, and context to daily routines. With new stories and examples as well as an updated resources section, A Dignified Life, Revised and Expanded gives caregivers the support and advice they need to be successful and inspired in their demanding roles.

While medical treatment of the disease hasn't changed in the past ten years, our understanding and awareness of treating people in a more caring way has changed substantially. With no cure on the immediate horizon, respectful care by effective and compassionate care partners is the only real "treatment" available to people with dementia. The Best Friends™ Approach is successful because it sustains people's connection to their world, their loved ones, and themselves. It's a universal program which has been embraced by professional and family caregivers throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and South America. In its revised form, A Dignified Life offers caregivers an antidote to the burnout and frustration that often accompanies the role of caring for a person with Alzheimer's and dementia. Rather than struggling through a series of frustrations and failures, A Dignified Life shows the new generation care partners how to bring dignity, meaning, and peace of mind to the lives of both those who have Alzheimer's and dementia and those who care for them.

What's Happening?

The Experience of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementia

What is it like to have Alzheimer's disease and other dementia? What would it be like to be unsure of your surroundings, to have difficulty communicating, to not recognize a once-familiar face, or to be unable to do things you have always enjoyed? When you understand the world of people with dementia, you can begin to understand their experiences, develop empathy, and relate better to their situations.

The experience of Alzheimer's disease and other dementia can be like taking a trip to a foreign country where you don't speak the language. Customs are different. Deciphering a restaurant menu proves difficult; you may think you are ordering soup and end up with fish! When paying a restaurant bill with unfamiliar currency you might fear that you are being shortchanged, cheated. Tasks so easy at home are major challenges in an unfamiliar setting and can be exhausting. The person with dementia is in a foreign land all the time, as seen in Irene Hong's postcard.

Hello Friends:

Rural Taiwan is lush and green but I'm staying in the noisy city of Taipei in my grandmother's place who is 80 and sharp as a nail. One thing that might interest you is that when my Mom first came back to Taiwan after a 20 year absence, she was so disoriented that she surmised this might be what the initial stages of Alzheimer's is like. She couldn't find the right words in Taiwanese (her native language) and she'd forgotten some of the customs though everybody expected her to know her way around her 'home' country. She felt so frustrated. It is true that Alzheimer's disease is like traveling in a foreign country, isn't it?

Irene Hong, volunteer, Postcard sent to Helping Hand Day Center

Rebecca Riley was one of our early teachers about the experience of dementia. A nurse and educator, Rebecca was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at age 59. When she first began having difficulty teaching, she thought it was because the course content was new. Soon, she knew something was wrong with her thinking and memory, and she suspected that she might have Alzheimer's disease. Her physician later confirmed her suspicions. Rebecca taught us about the world of dementia. Following are some of her written notes describing her experience:

• Depression

• Can't say what I want

• Afraid I can't express my thoughts and words―thus I remain silent and become depressed

• I need conversation to be slowly

• It is difficult to follow conversation with so much noise

• I feel that people turn me off because I cannot express myself

• I dislike social workers, nurses, and friends who do not treat me as a real person

• It is difficult to live one day at a time

Rebecca knew that she was losing her language skills and the ability to communicate her wishes. Her writing reveals that her once-meticulous grammar was slipping. Complexity became her enemy; she could not follow the din and roar of competing conversations―calling it 'noise.' Her statement about social workers, nurses, and friends who do not treat her as a 'real person' still makes us both smile and wince. Even though her cognitive skills were in decline, she recognized that people were treating her differently. -Consequently, she expressed her anger and some resentment toward these people. Remarkably, she was trying to create a plan for the future. Her notes indicate that she was deciding to take things 'one day at a time' even if it was a struggle.

Reading these heartfelt words, you too can begin to understand the experience of Alzheimer's disease and other dementia. Without understanding this world, we cannot possibly develop successful strategies for improving the lives of our friends or loved ones with dementia.

Emotions That Accompany Alzheimer's Disease

Persons with dementia commonly experience these emotions and feelings:

• Worry and anxiety

• Frustration

• Confusion

• Loss

• Sadness

• Embarrassment

• Paranoia

• Fear

• Anger

• Isolation and loneliness

COMMON EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS OF PERSONS WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND OTHER DEMENTIA

Every person's response to Alzheimer's disease or other dementia is different, but many people will experience one or more of the following emotions.

Worry and Anxiety

We all worry or become anxious at times. Parents worry and become anxious about their teenager who is not home by curfew. Families may worry about having enough money to pay all of their bills at the end of the month. Some people worry that a favorite celebrity's marriage is in trouble after reading the latest tabloid at the supermarket.

The person with dementia can become consumed by worry and anxiety. One frequent by-product of dementia is that the person cannot separate a small worry from an all-consuming concern. For example, a person with dementia may begin worrying about dark clouds in the sky seen through a window. Left unchecked, the worry can grow and wreck his or her afternoon. A spring shower could turn into a thunderstorm!

Harry Nelson was a practicing dentist when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in his mid-fifties. He was very anxious about his life and the lives of his family. He worried, when in spite of his determination to keep fit mentally, spiritually, and physically, his scores on his mental exam kept going down. He worried that he would not be able to go hiking with his grandson when he became old enough to enjoy a sport that he loved. His dreams and aspirations were on hold, and he had difficulty not being anxious about the future.

Best Book Ever!
By AmazonFan
I've never gone through anything more challenging than caring for someone I love with dementia. I had an opportunity to hear David Troxel in person at the Central Ca Women's Conf a few years ago. His experience in the industry of Alzheimer care is incredibly insightful & helpful to those he has taught on the subject.

I'll forever be grateful for his words of encouragement, hope & insights into the world of Alz a form of dementia. This book will give you the emotional tools you need to handle the overwhelming & unimaginable experiences that come your way thru this challenge by reminding us of human dignity & the approach that's so easy to grasp because it's exactly how we hope to be treated if we are diagnosed with a form of dementia.

I don't think David Troxel mentions it in this book, but at the conference you find out that he had both his parents diagnosed with Alz, so while he has been in the industry for over 30 years he is also personally acquainted with having a loved one diagnosed with dementia.

Give yourself the emotional tools you need by reading this book!

ALZ care giver book
By Portland_erin
Good ideas for care givers, gave me a lot of ideas on how to engage with my father. Ex. Instead of asking where he went on vacation, feed him questions like did you enjoy the beach? It's allowed me to have more meaningful conversations with my dad. Reading the book gave me peace with his reduced abilities. I really liked the suggestions for how to prepare memory books for home care.

Multiple Testing Procedures with Applications to Genomics (Springer Series in Statistics), by Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. van der Laan

This book establishes the theoretical foundations of a general methodology for multiple hypothesis testing and discusses its software implementation in R and SAS. These are applied to a range of problems in biomedical and genomic research, including identification of differentially expressed and co-expressed genes in high-throughput gene expression experiments; tests of association between gene expression measures and biological annotation metadata; sequence analysis; and genetic mapping of complex traits using single nucleotide polymorphisms. The procedures are based on a test statistics joint null distribution and provide Type I error control in testing problems involving general data generating distributions, null hypotheses, and test statistics.

Review

From the reviews:

"This book summarizes the recent work of Sandrine Dudoit and Mark van der Laan on multiple testing. It proposes a general framework for multiple testing procedures (MTPs) and introduces new concepts … . The authors also provide code for reproducing the results of some of the applications. … if one is looking for a detailed summary of the latest developments in multiple testing regarding MTPs or in the application of MTPs to biomedical and genomic data, then this book is an excellent reference." (Holger Schwender, Statistical Papers, Vol. 50, 2009)

"In the last decade a growing amount of statistical research has been devoted to multiple testing. This book summarizes the recent work on this area. … very useful for the applied researcher who would like to understand how to apply multiple testing. … a good reference for statisticians interested in a general treatment of multiple testing." (Avner Bar-Hen, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2009 j)

From the Back Cover

This book establishes the theoretical foundations of a general methodology for multiple hypothesis testing and discusses its software implementation in R and SAS. The methods are applied to a range of testing problems in biomedical and genomic research, including the identification of differentially expressed and co-expressed genes in high-throughput gene expression experiments, such as microarray experiments; tests of association between gene expression measures and biological annotation metadata (e.g., Gene Ontology); sequence analysis; and the genetic mapping of complex traits using single nucleotide polymorphisms.

The book is aimed at both statisticians interested in multiple testing theory and applied scientists encountering high-dimensional testing problems in their subject matter area. Specifically, the book proposes resampling-based single-step and stepwise multiple testing procedures for controlling a broad class of Type I error rates, defined as tail probabilities and expected values for arbitrary functions of the numbers of Type I errors and rejected hypotheses (e.g., false discovery rate). Unlike existing approaches, the procedures are based on a test statistics joint null distribution and provide Type I error control in testing problems involving general data generating distributions (with arbitrary dependence structures among variables), null hypotheses, and test statistics. The multiple testing results are reported in terms of rejection regions, parameter confidence regions, and adjusted p-values.

Sandrine Dudoit is Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley (www.stat.berkeley.edu/~sandrine). Her research and teaching activities concern the development and application of statistical and computational methods for the analysis of high-dimensional biomedical and genomic data. She is a founding core developer of the Bioconductor Project and is an Associate Editor for six journals, including the Annals of Applied Statistics and Statistical Applications in Genetics and Molecular Biology.

Mark J. van der Laan is Hsu/Peace Professor of Biostatistics and Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley (www.stat.berkeley.edu/~laan). His research concerns causal inference, adjusting for missing and censored data, and simultaneous estimation and testing based on high-dimensional observational and experimental biomedical and genomic data. He is co-author with James Robins of Unified Methods for Censored Longitudinal Data and Causality (Springer, 2003). He is a recipient of the 2005 COPSS Presidents' and Snedecor Awards and is an active Associate Editor for five journals, including the Annals of Statistics and the International Journal of Biostatistics.

multiple testing with microarrays
By Michael R. Chernick
The traditional approach to multiple testing or simultaneous inference was to take a small number of correlated or uncorrelated tests and estimate a family-wise type I error rate that minimizes the the probability of just one type I error out of the whole set whan all the null hypotheses hold. Bounds like Bonferroni or Sidak were sometimes used to as method for constraining the typeI error as they represented upper bounds. Other approaches were to use multivariate methods for tests statistics such as Tukey's least significant difference, Scheffe's method and Dunnett's test. More recently stepdown procedures have become popular in clinical trials but there the multiplicity is usually 5 or less. With the introduction of the bootstrap and advances in computer speed that allowed permutation methods to gain a greater prominence also Westfall and Young came up with a prescription for using resampling to adjust individual p-values for the multiple testing and this was implemented in the SAS procedure MULTTEST and documented both in the SAS manual and the book by Westfall and Young in the mid 1990s. The authors of this text want to extend multiple testing to microarrays where literally thousands of hypothesis are being tested on a single array. Dudoit and van der Laan extend the theory to permit bootstrapping to work in a much broader context where many criteria other than familywise error rate (FWER)are considered including false discovery rate (FDR). They say that for problems involving very high dimensional data an assumption they call subset pivotality does not apply. This assumption is essentially what is needed in the Westfall and Young theory and involves the use of what the authors call a data generating null distribution. To create a method that works for microarray and other high dimensional data the authors base their procedrues onthe joint null distribution of the test statistics rather than the data generating null distributions that all other methods depend on.

The book provides a very general theory that generalizes the ideas of resampling based methods to a new framework. The authors intend the book for both statisticians and applied scientists who encounter high-dimensional data in their subject area. The book provides a very detailed and highly theoretical account of multiple testing and may not be suitable for some applied statisticians and scientists. But the ideas are important to all especially in the area of genomics. The authors claim that chapters 4-7 are theoretical chapters that may not be suitable for everyone but they insist that the introductory chapters 1-3 and the applications chapters 8-13 are intended for people with a good biological background but not necessarily a very strong statistical background. I do not share their view about chapters 1-3 which I think would be difficult for anyone lack a graduate level statistics background but I do agree that the applications chapters 8-13 are palatable for the intended audience and is particular interesting for those with knowledge of and interest in the biological sciences.
