The code no longer works in the current Mathematica version

The section on symmetric chaos in the complex plane is inspired.
My library book lacks the cd rom, but tried typing in the Joukowski[]
plotting function only too find that it is almost impossible to translate into
the current version. I haven't tried other program code,
but that sure makes the price of the book seem high, if few of the programs work
anymore? Translation to the modern version of Mathematica would take time
and be hard for beginning students. If the coverage and worth of the
book were just the code I would give it a lower rating, but the author
has given new insight in many areas of complex analysis and
the book is worth reading by serious students.

A true delight

What a wonderful and delightful book. The author has taken a well-worn topic and infused it with insight and energy. Best of all, the author communicates simply and clearly. He has brought graduate complex analysis to the masses; I wish that I had a book like this as an undergraduate. It is also a great read: the kind of pick you could pick up and go cover to cover with. However, you'll probably want to be at your keyboard trying out his many examples. The unique thing about this tome is that it is well-written, it is mathematically ambitious and it is an invaluable reference for how to use Mathematica. Also, as we have come to expect from Cambridge, this book has excellent production quality.

Easy to comprehend and well-facilitated.

I must admit that my very limited knowledge about computer programming could serve a hindrance in learning any computer language. Maybe I am just persistent in learning any language that seems vital in my online business endeavor. And this book has proven me wrong. The very basics of phyton language is easy to comprehend and I am sure that I can start from there. The written workshop or exercise at the end of each basic lessons has facilitated my learning about phyton language. I might not have learned all the essential parts or elements of phyton language after reading this book, but I am sure that I have grasped the overall concept of learning such language. With more practice and the guidance of this book, I am positive that I can learn this language and apply it in my online endeavors.

Learned a lot!

I’ve been doing some computer programming as a hobby. I’ve always dreamt of one day having my own IT firm. Lol. Back to reality! Anyways, I’ve learned so much from this book and actually helped me understand some programming issues I had with Python. I’m technically new to Python so I had some issues with the program. This book helped me understand the twist and tricks behind the program. I still have a lot to learn about Python but I know I can overcome it because I made with the right move…and that purchasing this book. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to start learning Python!

I knew nothing about this subject or man so I found it quite interesting. It was very detailed about his life when he was involved in The Black Panther movement. I always love a testimony about an evil man turning to Jesus and becoming saved. I was very saddened to read through further research that he did not hold on to his Christian faith though.

Controversial, anti-communist, manifesto, swept under the rug?

In many ways this seems a companion piece to his earlier work "Soul on Ice". In some ways this seems more controversial or anti-American. He talks about police brutality, police overstepping their authority (warrantless searches) and murder by police. Cleaver's seventeen year old friend, Bobbie Hutton, was murdered in police custody. With Cleaver as a living witness. Cleaver chronicles Hutton as the first of 19 Panther members, sympathizers, or young black men, killed by 'justifiable homicide' across the country during 1968 and 1969. I'd heard some of these stories before but never knew the killing was 48 hours of Martin Luther Kings assassination. In the Village Voice it was later reported, "Cleaver said that he led the Panther group on a deliberate ambush of the police officers". This book is mostly about police misconduct, so there's no tally of the number of police allegedly killed by Panthers, or killed during 1968 and 1969. The memoirs of surviving family members don't seem to be big sellers on the college lecture circuit or adored by the in-crowd either. Neither does Cleaver's Soul on Fire, for that matter. There are very few links to this book. I believe this is the first review on Amazon. Even the copy I had from the library looks as if it may have never been checked out before.

Soul on Fire is a more proper autobiography than his earlier book. There are plenty of photos of Cleaver in Peking, Hanoi, Paris, Africa, and photos of his parents and children. The contents are for the most part in chronological order with Cleaver simply talking about experiences he's had from early childhood up until the publishing of the book. I suppose the major theme of the work is his disenchantment with communism. Ishmael Reed, in the introduction to Soul on Ice, writes, "He wrote a second book, Soul on Fire, which in many ways was as absorbing as Soul on Ice. But like Till Eulenspiegel, he had worked his tricks too many times; the book was ignored and his description of his conversion to Christianity, mocked".

Cleaver writes, "Since I covered so much of the Black Muslim routine in Soul on Ice and my deep attachment to the personality and teachings of Malcolm X, it is important therefore to discuss some topics that I purposely avoided in that first book". He adds that he never quite shared the hatred some had for all whites and that he began to gravitate towards the writings of Karl Marx and the communist manifesto. When he went into exile after being 'wanted' by the police, where so many black leaders seemed to go, he wound up in Cuba. He quotes a young black cuban army officer there, Captain Toro, "the last white hope of the traditional Cuban ruling class, which, given the choice between a black-led revolution and a white one, had chosen Fidel". Cleaver didn't like Cuba or his treatment at their hands and left for Algeria.

There's a humorous story, not in this book, about how when Timothy Leary fled to Algeria, Cleaver put him under house arrest as being an enemy of the people/revolution. Leary promoted drug use. Cleaver would go on to visit North Korea, China, Central Africa and North Vietnam (while the US was at war with them) and was treated as a VIP. Cleaver claims that the North Vietnamese paid his living expenses while he lived in Algeria and later in France. He writes, "By 1969 The Black Panther paper was saturated with Mao slogans". He quotes several passages, including one from the Omaha Nebraska branch, that are word from word taken from the Little Red Book.

Cleaver writes that the biggest break he had with the communists was when his children were born. He also began to break with the Marxists (and he would challenge their dignitaries and translators some the way he had challenged America) when he saw Marxism put into practice. He notes a humorous exchange he had with a public official in China. When asked how many black Americans there were, Cleaver exaggerated a figure of 40 million. The official responded, "ah, we have some villages that size". Also Cleaver didn't like the enforced mentality of everyone saying the exact same thing (this public official excluded). In his head he began to take stock of the way things were done overseas as compared to America. Of Algeria he says a citizen might just disappear, "When the Algerians clamp down, I'm talking about a coffin lid, not a closed door". Cleaver would finally say, "I'd rather be a prisoner in America than free anywhere else".

Cleaver notes that, "very carefully, communism had divided everything into materialism and idealism. Everything you couldn't measure or weigh, well, that was idealism, and therefore it didn't exist. Music, poetry, your soul, and everything that is related to religion was false". I've noticed this of progressive activists myself. After deconstructing all values as oppressive, nothing other than materialism remains, an endpoint opposite the one progressives would make claim they are for bringing about. Not that I disagree with the communists, or begrudge Cleaver's flight overseas, in fact, I think the whole thing was a gigantic fraud designed for the purpose of discrediting communism, I just don't want the 'communists' I know teaching my son in Bible school. Can we outlaw Sunday school. . .? Please!

At one point in the book Cleaver has a run in with the chief of police in Algiers. Cleaver was 'running a stolen car ring' for one thing. He was buying European cars on 'credit' and selling them in Africa and the Mideast. So, even exiled in Africa Cleaver was still outsmarting and getting over on the white man. As the Algerian authority tries to delicately chastise him, or make Cleaver see this officials side, the conflict in a way makes Cleaver look bad. It's written in a way, as if Cleaver is a bit self absorbed and can't see the error of his own ways or his own arguments objectively.

At one point after leaving Algeria for France, he talks about a white frenchman's view of anti-colonialism, "I felt there was something blind and indiscriminate about his total condemnation of the white race and total absolution of people of color". At an earlier point in the book, Cleaver writes, "Many people have the idea that, once upon a time, america was a peaceful garden of eden and then along came the black panther party which in turn gave rise to chaos. That is a patently false impression". Well, the Panthers didn't exactly invent 'anti-colonialism'.

When Cleaver returned home (in custody) from exile overseas, he writes, "members of the black panthers held a series of press conferences denouncing me as an FBI informer and CIA agent. . . all of my old friends, with the exception of one or two rejected me". Let me be honest here. Wasn't sure where I'd put this in here, or what I would say (imagined something a lot more eloquent or informative than this) let me just say, I think they are all the police.

He talks about religion on occasion in his two books. . . Here he notes the Nation of Islam's claim that America is the 'Babylon' referred to in the book of Revelations. It isn't till the very end, though, that we read about Cleavers conversion. It came almost suddenly at the end. Then the back cover lists quotes from religious figures praising the work, in such a way you might expect to see this book sold at church - after a visit from Eldridge Cleaver, visiting clergyman. I think if it were more in depth on his conversion it might have raised our guard and had the reader wondering if this is trying to talk us into something or selling us or justify something.

Cleaver became a conservative republican. . . but, reading an interview he had with NPR, about a year before his death, Cleaver was definitely a 'new republican'. He wasn't ashamed of his Panther past, from the excerpt in the interview, and many of his views seemed quite liberal. Always his own, and a renaissance, man.

Read this back in 1998

I read this book after reading "soul on ice". I liked the earlier book, but it actually leaves out quite a bit. In this book its more autobiographical. I really enjoyed his descriptions of actual communism, and not the idealized version that we read about typically.(My wife lived in Eastern Europe in the 80's) Overall I think it was much better than his first book, and fills in some of the holes.

Part 4 includes a unified computer programme written in FORTRAN/C for the analysis of a framed structure. The development of computer programme, explanation of various subroutines, and input output formats with examples are also provided. An accompanying CD contains source code, explanation of INPUT/OUTPUT and test examples. The primary objective of the book is to present the subject matter in a simple manner so that it can serve as a basic learning tool for undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering.

About the Author
P.N. Godbole obtained Bachelors (Honours) degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Bombay, Masters (Structures) from the erstwhile University of Roorkee, India (Now IIT Roorkee) and Doctorate from University of Wales, Swansea, UK. He worked in various capacities at Civil Engineering Department of University of Roorkee from 1963 onwards, where he had a long and distinguished career in teaching, research and consultancy. After retirement, he joined VNIT, Nagpur, where he utilized award of AICTE and UGC Emeritus Fellowship and later on continued as Professor Emeritus. At present he is Professor Emeritus at RCOEM Nagpur, India. He has published more than 140 research papers in national and international journals/conferences and has supervised 25 doctoral candidates. He has also authored books on Cable Suspended Roofs and Finite Element Method.His main areas of interest are finite element method, computer aided design, wind effects on structure and steel structures. R.S. Sonparote , PhD, is Associate Professor, Department of Applied Mechanics, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, India. With 20 years of experience in teaching, research and consultancy, Dr. Sonparote has published/presented several papers in national and international journals/conferences.His main areas of interest are computer aided analysis and design, structural dynamics and soil structure interaction. S.U. Dhote is Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering (YCCE), Nagpur, India. His areas of interest are wind effects, matrix analysis, steel structures, earthquake resistance designs and finite element method. This book allowed insight as to how a construction project is completed from start to finish. It also provides a window into how government makes decisions throughout the process, from capital project planning through construction completion. It details numerous functions that a project manager will perform throughout the life of a project. Furthermore, it provides insight into how design firms and contractors are chosen to perform work. the example project is a fire station that combines many commercial materials along with some specialty items.

Very Informative

I have read over 80 books on this subject. I rate this book just under William Shirers book(Rise & Fall of Third Reich)for its completeness--up to Hitlers ascention to power. Most of what is included in the book agrees with other smaller books that are more focused on narrower segents of the period. If you want an overview with plenty of the details but don't want to try your hand at Shirer's 1600 pages then this is a great work at about 600 pages.

Daunting but worth the read.

The Fuhrer, by Konrad Heiden, is an intriguing analysis of Hitler's rise to power that was written by one of his contemporaries. Heiden, a Socialist, who nevertheless is more objective than one would expect, seeks to show the scheming, events, and popular sentiments that led to Hitler's rise to power while at the same time foreshadowing the danger of Hitler's rule. The only departures from objectivity are those places in which Hitler is called "the Antichrist" and is said to be the true follower of The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. The conventional belief is that it was "the Jewish enemy" that was carrying them out, in stark contrast to Heiden's views.
Although the book is an analysis of Hitler's rise to power, it is not a comprehensive biography. It starts with events that occured before his birth and ends during the Blood Purge of 1933, in which Hitler the chancellor, orders the systematic murder of his enemies. The book does not even go as far as the start of World War II or the Holocaust, as by then, Hitler had rose to power, and his achievements went downhill from there.
The book is written in ponderous scholarly language and takes effort to read. As a fulltime student, it took me about 20 days to finish the 600 odd pages. It is replete with reported anecdotes and excerpts from Hitler's speeches, correspondences, and correspondences relating to him, enhancing and lengthening the volume. If one can avoid falling asleep and really pay attention to what is being said, one will realize the clarity and relevance of the book.
I bought this book because it was the cheapest biography of Hitler I could find, and I was not disappointed. I recommend this book to all diligent readers who desire a greater understanding of how Hitler became the Fuhrer.

Thoroughly researched

Heiden's book covers the rise of Hitler up until the Rohm purge of 1934. This book is unique in that Heiden was there to watch Hitler's rise to power; and then write about it. The book is well researched and quite methodical in its presentation of Hitler's rise to power. However, I did find some of the chapters to be overly long and wordy. I often asked myself "...what does this information have to do with the chapter title?" Some of the material comes across as a bit dry. Nevertheless, I think the book would be a valuable addition to anyone's library.

Great story! Terrible editing!!!

I really enjoyed the story line and couldn't wait to see how the relationship played out. At times, I had tears in my eyes at the emotional scenes between Elli and Shea. Who could have thought a man could be so sensitive! The only reason that I couldn't give this book the maximum stars was because of the non-editing! There were so many grammar errors that at times made me stop to think what the author was trying to say. Believe me, it was bad!

Self-Published Books: A Two-Sided Coin

I downloaded this because it came up as a recommendation for me, it had a good number of reviews (which I should have admittedly read more of), and I'm a fan of both Rachel Gibson's and Deirdre Martin's hockey series. However, it was very clear after only one chapter that despite what might be a "cute" story (according to reviews - I could never get that far in to it), this was a very poorly written telling of that story.

Yes, there were editing problems, but my dissatisfaction stems more from things such as simplistic sentence/paragraph construction and awkward dialogue. In just the four chapters I could manage to get through, the number of paragraphs that included multiple sentences in a row that started with the word "He" or "She" in reference to a character really grated on my nerves. They read like check lists, not narratives. If you are writing a story, you should closely examine the sentence and paragraph construction of books you admire. You can't just string a bunch of sentences together that basically say (in this precise format): "She took this action. She took another action. She took another action," and pat yourself on the back for having put together a decent paragraph.

And then there was the strained dialogue that sounded less like two people of reasonable intelligence talking to each other, and more like too moronic teenagers talking outside of their lockers in a high school corridor. It's hard to identify with chemistry between two characters when you are questioning their intelligence in the first place.

I know this is particularly harsh, but the fact is, it's a lesson for the consumer. You really need to investigate a book when you download, since it's now so easy to just buy a book without thinking much of it beforehand. I know some really very good romance novelists have grown out of the self-published world in the past few years, and I think it's great that publishing is more democratic. But editing isn't just about composition, it's also about quality. So it's really important to pick and choose what you download very carefully (particularly when the price point goes from $.99 to $2.99 - I'm a lot more willing to take a chance on a self-published book for under a dollar than I am for $3).

"Think before you one-click," will be my motto going forward.

Maybe with an editor and some more work, Ms. Aleo will become a promising author, but I really can't find anything to recommend in this book as it is right now.

Way Too Long

In it's current incarnation, Taking Shots is a good rough draft for a sports romance. H is a gifted professional hockey player who comes from a stable family and is actually a really nice guy. h is a poor little rich girl who has issues with her family and her body image. That notwithstanding, she is supporting herself as a professional photographer and is doing well. How she works through her issues and is finally able to accept her HEA with H could have been a really good book.

One of my smain gripe is the author's writing style. The whole book sounds like it was written by an eighth grader -- full of "he saids" and "she saids" and for a change of pace "she gushed". Thanks to the Kindle word search, I found out that that phrase was used sixty-seven times! Enough! If all else fails, use a Thesaurus to find some alternate words.

The author also gets bogged down in the minutia of the characters' lives. h gets up in the morning, she showers, she shampoos her hair, she rinses her hair, she gets out of the shower and wraps herself in a towel, she combs her hair, she puts on her makeup, her lip gloss, and her mascara, she curls her hair... By the time I got to 20% of the book, I was looking at the progress bar on my Kindle to see how much more there was to read.

There are also two scenes where the heroine vomits and one where the hero vomits. How this is supposed to be romantic? I don't understand, but that's just me.

From reading other reviews, it seems that the original version of Taking Shots was full of grammatical errors. The author has a disclaimer on the book's Amazon page which says that it has been edited. If this is true, it wasn't edited well enough. It's still riddled with grammatical errors, spelling errors, weird word usage.

The version I read went on for 458 pages. The author needs to sit down and ruthlessly cut out about 200 pages of unnecessary description. This was a good start, but the author needs a lot of help refining and polishing her story.
