Meet the Cars is currently the one to get

I'm a pretty big fan of Pixar's CARS and was actually disappointed that the DK's CARS ESSENTIAL GUIDE just didn't give me the knowledge that I wanted. And what is it that I want? I want a book that gave me the background info not on the main characters - but EVERYONE ELSE. I'm talking about each and every other race car (besides the main three) and a whole lot more.

This book is currently the CLOSEST at doing just that, giving you a short paragraph back story on *almost* every car seen in the film, including the year, model / make of the car as well. Did you know that every race car has an individual name just like Lightning McQueen? I sure didn't and you'll find them all here (not even the Mattel toys give you the name of the individual race cars).

I'm sure in time there will be an expanded book as they've left out a handful of background characters (excluded from the book are some racers like LEAK LESS and NITROADE) and they're missing some of the names on a few as well (the book lists Chief No Stall, not Roman Dunes which is his name). Despite the incomplete nature of the book, this is the next best resource for CARS you can currently buy, following the BluRay of the movie itself.

And just to be clear, this IS a children's book so don't expect hardcore Star Wars type bios and stats pages. So if you or your kid is more interested in reading about the different cars than about Radiator Springs or the Piston Cup, this is the book to get. If the photos on the amazon page doesn't help, pick up the book at the book store and give it a careful glance if this is the book to add to your collection.

This book is for real fans.
Inside you will find the description of most cars you watched in the movie. Sadly, it's missing the four cars from the highway at night gang (boost, wingo, dj and snot-rod).
All in all, the quality of the book is excellent, hard cover, very fine pictures and a full poster.

This is the perfect book for any cars fan. I have a three year old boy that destroys these books because he looks through them so much. He likes to look at every car and ask me his name.. this goes on and on until we go through every car in the book. Takes forever!! ...then when we finish the book, he starts over!! ahahah high quality hard cover book. worth every penny!!

Disappointing

This book is definitely worth reading, but compared with the author's previous book (Building a Bidding System) and the standard for excellence it set, I found it to be hugely disappointing.

Too often, the book's content presented this type of message: "This is what I play and you should play it this way too." In many cases, the advocated methods were not clearly "the right way" (though usually worthwhile or, at least, representing a sensible way to play). And in many cases, when reasons for playing the recommended agreements were offered, I found the reasons unconvincing. (In fact, in a few cases, I thought the suggested methods were inferior to alternatives of which I am aware.) Only occasionally were alternatives presented with an analysis of the benefits and drawbacks their relative strengths and weaknesses. That is a real shame, because it was in such instances that the author was at his best.

The main benefit of this book is the message it makes time and again: partnerships wishing to be consistently successful must discuss and establish competitive auction agreements. With respect to this issue, a ton of ground was covered. In fact, near the end of the book, one chapter identifies a large number of auctions where agreements are not often made. This chapter alone was worth the price of the book.

Concise encapsulation of current expert practice

If you have read the Robson-Segal book on Partnership bidding, Mike Lawrence's book on overcalls, and play a Lebensohl-like system, then there is not much here that is new in terms of bidding content. If you are not familiar with them (and even if you are), you get a nice synthesis of current expert practice in this book. Roy Hughes' writing is clear and logical. An intermediate/advancing player will learn a lot.

Why only 4 starts? One thing that I look for in a book like this is a way to develop bidding judgment. I wish there had been quizzes at the end of each chapter. Maybe in the next edition?

He traces American currency's long, contentious gold-silver bimetalist saga, marked by the so-called Congressional coinage "crime of 1873" and ending with William Jennings Bryan's unsuccessful "Cross of Gold" presidential campaign in 1896. Friedman cites harsh lessons from postwar hyperinflation in many countries and declares that Roosevelt's 1933 silver-buying program may have skewed China's silver-based economy toward eventual communism. Uncontrolled money growth is the cause of inflation, the author stresses, and only monetary reform, despite undesirable side effects like unemployment, can cure it. Abstruse, theoretical and chiefly for the initiate, the book recycles parts of earlier works by Friedman, who himself suggests here that the general reader might wish to skip a particularly challenging chapter.

A lively, enlightening introduction to monetary history from the libertarian economist whose contributions to the quantity theory of money earned him a Nobel Prize in 1976. Starting from the premise that no society or individual is unaffected by monetary policy (which centers on control of a nation's money supply), Friedman (co-author, Tyranny of the Status Quo, 1984, etc.) offers a quick and simplified briefing on monetary theory that stresses, among other matters, one of his favorite themes--that ``inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.'' His stage set, Friedman ranges widely over time and place in demonstrating that there invariably is more than meets the eye to monetary events. He recounts, for example, how an 1873 coinage law had unintended consequences for American politics and economics over the next couple of decades. The author moves on to link the 1887 invention in Scotland of a process to extract gold from low-grade South African ore to the frustration of William Jennings Bryan's presidential aspirations in 1896 and beyond, moving smoothly into an accessible discussion of bimetallism. Friedman also makes a plausible case for the proposition that FDR's silver-purchase program during the 1930's hastened the Communist takeover of mainland China after WW II. Covered as well (in a prescriptive anti-Keynesian context) are upward price spirals down through the ages, the collapse of the Bretton Woods accord, fiat money, specie, the European Monetary System, and efforts by Third World countries to peg their currencies to the US dollar. Friedman is perhaps best know to the general public for his vigorous defense of free market economics and limited government political philosophy. Within the academic world, however, Friedman is known for his economic theory of monetarism. Here Friedman again assumes the role of popular educator, but now does so to explain the nature and importance of currency. Friedman challenges the way most people think of money, indeed destroys some things most would take for granted. Money is, first and foremost, a social construct, and the value and usefulness of money can be enhanced or eroded as people gain or lose trust in a currency. Most of the book is a straightforward explanation of the nature of currency and the history of money - particularly in the United States. But Friedman does deviate from this basic purpose for a single chapter as he delves into some of the nitty gritty details of monetary economics. It's a chapter that, by his own admission, can and perhaps should be skipped by those lacking a firm grasp of economics, though its inclusion is worthy for those with some background in economics who still retain illusions about the nature of money.

Before you spout off about monetary policy, the Fed, central banks, fractional reserves, "banksters", or paper money, Read. This. Book. This book provides important historical insight, and gives a clearer idea of what money is. This book also clears up what inflation is, and what causes it, and how even gold-backed money can be inflationary. It even provides insight into the change from the old Democratic Party to the modern progressive Democratic Party, as well as the background on one of the most famous speeches in US history (for many years THE most famous speech). And it provides the story of how our shortsighted and then-protectionist monetary policy weakened the government in China and helped pave the way for the Communist takeover. A must read.

Very simple and clear explanation of monetary ideas

This book from Milton Friedman is the first one I read from him, although I've watched a lot of videos at youtube and other online channels with him. The monetary things are explained in his simple and clear style and while reading I get insights about things that were very messed up in my head before that. Highly recommend for general understanding of the problems of today's society like inflation, goverment regulations and policies and money. There are also some description of how the FED and the other central banks function, as well as general explanation of what money are. There are 2-3 chapters that are targeted at more experienced economists with some math formulas and statistics but in general the book is not scientific and is contributing to each mind that reads it.

Shy Liam's only means of confidence during shared story time is to tell tales of the gargoyle. His classmate mock him at first but are soon are captivated by his storytelling, and his teacher's slight nods of encouragement fuel Liam's belief in the bird and lead him to think that she knows a thing or two about the old bird herself.
As his home life gets harder and the bullies more relentless the gargoyle seemingly brings Liam's stories to life-swooping in to protect and defend him in the most unexpected ways. But is the old stone bird really alive, or is it just Liam's imagination finding ways to help him through a difficult time?

Mike Revell used to be one of those kids who didn't like reading. He was more inclined to run home and play video games than dive into a book. But the boy wizard changed that for him, not only did Harry Potter make him a reader, it made him want to be an author too; he wanted to give to people the same feelings of wonder and enjoyment that J.K. Rowling gave to him as a young boy. Stonebird is Mike's first novel and is influenced by the real experiences of seeing his grandmother suffer from dementia, as well as his love of myths. STONEBIRD is Middle-Grade Magical Realism at its Best.

The best thing about STONEBIRD by Mike Revell is that its size --- a thin book of only 200-something pages --- is not indicative at all of its heart and story.

Set in England, in a town called Swanbury, STONEBIRD is middle-grade magical realism at its best. It's got a stark and real life-narrative, punctuated by the gritty reality of illness and pain that becomes more and more apparent to young kids as they grow up. But it also has the wonder of childhood, reminiscent of nostalgia and imagination. The combination of the two is hopeful rather than bleak and depressing. It’s as if the book is saying that sometimes, the world that seems so logical can be a little less so. And for Liam, the main character at the heart of STONEBIRD, that makes all the difference.

You see, Liam's grandmother has been taken over by a demon --- or dementia, as the doctors are calling it --- and it looks like she's only getting worse. That's why his mother moved him and his sister across the country to be closer to her. The dementia is quickly taking everything away from Liam --- his mother spends more time with a wine bottle than her kids, his sister is never home and Liam can't settle in at school because of a bully named Matt. When Liam finds his grandmother's diary and discovers a penchant for telling stories involving the anthropomorphic gargoyle named Stonebird in his backyard, things get a little better, especially when strange things happen in accordance with his tales. As his stories about Stonebird get more elaborate, so does his hope for the future.

I love that STONEBIRD doesn’t shy away from discussing tough issues as well as memories --- who will tell your story when you are incapable of doing it yourself? Everything was woven together so seamlessly. Readers are treated to history as well, as Revell takes us back to WWII with Liam's grandma's diary. This new voice helped break up the slow parts of the book. I also really enjoyed the various antagonists and conflicts that the magic of Stonebird helped fix --- tangible things like Matt and his bullying friends and an unkempt lawn and things unseen, like his grandmother's dementia and mom's drinking problem.

But where the story falls short is that Liam is almost a little too self-aware at times for a seven-year-old boy. Also, especially at the beginning, the story crawls along, a bit. However, this book overall was such a delight that I was okay with that.

All in all, I think STONEBIRD is a treat that needs to be shared. The deep layers that Revell writes into the book really make it shine; it is so much more than it seems at first glance. I hope many young and more experienced readers are able to meet Liam and read his story. It's a great one.

Great book! Here is the plot!

This book was a great book, and it might help you decide whether to buy it or not if you read my review:

Mike Revell's debut is one of the greatest books that I have ever read! This story, featuring an 11-year old boy named Liam as the narrator, contains a mix of many different things. When Liam and his sister Jessica (mostly called Jess), along with his mother Sue, move to Swanbury, a lot of things change for all 3 of them. Before they had left, Liam's dad went away and things have been tough for them ever since. When Liam moves to Swanbury, though, some magical things happen. He goes to a new school with new bullies and new teachers. One of the kindest teachers that Liam had ever met is Ms. Culpepper. She's always so fun and likes to joke around and tell riddles. She has a 'magic egg' that she likes to use when the class is storytelling, and the only person who's allowed to talk is the person holding that egg. Liam enjoys school very much, but another thing is on his mind. There's a gargoyle in a crypt in a nearby church that seems to do everything that Liam story-tells about. And apart from the gargoyle, his grandmother is suffering from dementia, and he has found a diary from her childhood that may prove to have some interesting information. Can he use the gargoyle to solve all of his problems, or may it turn out to not be the best idea that he has? Read this hopeful and touching story to find out! Good debut, interesting story.

Liam is eleven years old. His absent father moved out of home for another woman several years ago, and his mother has never coped. Now his maternal grandmother being in a care facility with dementia, has pushed his mum over the edge.

But there are 2 mysteries to distract Liam from these cares. And from Matt, the bully, who uses his 2 henchmen to outnumber Liam like a lily-livered coward. Grandma's diary of her teen years hints to a mysterious disappearance, and also points Liam to the enigma of the gargoyle, Stonebird.

What I liked is the depth of the story, such as the unflinching look at alcoholism and dementia. The exploration of memory, and it's importance to character. The war's effects on France.

From a literary perspective, there was symmetry in the circular motion of the plot, to a satisfying resolution.

The minor quibbles: the voice grated on me at times. It came from some of the analogies, which didn't reflect the voice of an 11-year-old. And the flatness of the emotion, when others' emotions are put up for display, especially Mum's. I'd have expected more visceral anger: at Matt, at his sister, Jess, his mother for copping out on him.

And, who noticed that Claire was actually 12, not 13?

The start was slow, but the story built up momentum to an interesting and magical conclusion, if not, a resounding crescendo.

One of our favorites!

We love this book! As a parent of two toddlers, I have read a lot of children's books and this is one of my favorites! It is so fun to read and easy for the kids to memorize so they can "read" along. It's also really fun to act out the story, if you're feeling creative. The board book is very sturdy and we haven't had issues yet with durability. I am very pleased with this book and we've even purchased it again as a gift.
