Reynolds, the very spare text literally sparkles and matches the mood of the story perfectly. Have you ever wondered what might happen if you planted a kiss? No? Well, you are in for a delight when you share this book with your special child. Before you begin, ask your little one to predict what might happen if he or she planted a kiss. so cute and so much fun to read

Very simple story, but so cute and so much fun to read. The illustrations are adorable too. This is one of those books where my kids can point out different things or add their own ideas without me getting frustrated because I'm trying to read the words. I rotate books on our mantle for the changing holidays and seasons, and this was perfect for our Valentine's display. We read it throughout the year, though, because it's so much fun.

We absolutely love this book. While simple in its wording, the message is impactful. The book teaches children to spread their joy, to not be selfish with what makes them special, and that by sharing the joy in their own life with others, they will experience even more happiness. This message is essential for our kids in an ever growing world of entitlement and negativity. Stay positive. Help others. Share.

In addition to the great message, we also love the illustrations and texture in the book. Peter Reynolds is one of our favorites, and he definitely does not disappoint in "Plant A Kiss". Much like the wording, the illustrations are simple yet impactful. There is also glitter added to the "joy" on each page, which grows in size as the story grows. The glitter really adds eye appeal and sensory appeal with its texture.

This is an A+ picture book. You won't be disappointed!

About the Author
Adam Kucharski is a lecturer in mathematical modeling at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and an award-winning science writer. He studied at the University of Warwick before completing a PhD in mathematics at the University of Cambridge. The winner of the 2012 Wellcome Trust Science Writing Prize, Kucharski lives in London.

From beginning to end you will enjoy, wonder and learn.

An amazing collection of ideas, facts, anecdotes, theories and stories brought together to express how betting relates to science - and visa versa. From psychological bias to The Great Wall of China, finance and ecosystems, tobacco advertising and prisoners, wine sales and exam results, horse racing to DNA sequencing, bots trying to reproduce human error, you will be fascinated at how these are all connected. Incredible in depth research and personal interviews ensure a unique perspective on this fascinating subject. From beginning to end you will enjoy, wonder and learn.

interesting material, uneven writing

“The Perfect Bet” has much interesting material on the application of science to gambling; science includes physics, statistical methods, probability theory, more general mathematical analysis and artificial intelligence. The writing is uneven, but better in the later chapters, although I wonder whether “training” in artificial intelligence is as self-explanatory as the author seems to assume. Kucharski has an annoying habit of jumping around in his discussions. Some of this is due to digressions, only some of which are really relevant; e.g. is it useful to discuss Fisher’s work on experimental design as a background to the lottery problem of insuring that random outcomes do not lead to undesirable results, like too long between winners? If you wish to give the reader a feel for regression, I find the discussion of Galton’s work on inheritance an odd choice, and in a book designed to be readable by everyone do you need to mention Markov simulation and even Markov chains? I looked up Markov simulation in Wikipedia, and the idea is to use Markov chains to help generate random numbers with a particular probability distribution.

I had no idea that with the aid of cell phone capabilities you could use physics to beat roulette: cf. introductory anecdote to the chapter on roulette, although it is kind of buried much later in the chapter that the threesome were not using lasers, but probably using cell phone capabilities. The use of multiple decks by casinos to defeat card counters can be self-defeating if they do not shuffle enough, and the theory that tells how many times the casino needs to shuffle is also used to calculate the “mixing time” of chemical interactions. Use of computer like devices is now banned for both blackjack and poker (there is now an annual competition of poker bots who employ strategies like bluffing just as human players do, and are championship caliber players). Simulation has shown that complex ecosystems, with many species, will blow up unless some of the species are in a predator – prey relationship. The relevance of this is that financial markets subject to high speed trading often have many competing computer bots in the game, and because of the need for speed, these bots do not use sophisticated algorithms, kind of like animals, or at least computer representations of them.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. I'm not into gambling at all but there are some fascinating stories in here that are woven together very elegantly. Lots of nice insights into human (and not so human) behaviour.

About the Author
In the late 1990s in Poughkeepsie, New York, the bodies of prostitutes were piling up. Lt. Bill Siegrist knew a serial killer was preying on the women. Determined to stop any further killing, Siegrist followed a trail that led him to Kendall Francois, a middle school monitor with the nickname Stinky, because of his slovenly hygiene. When Francois was finally arrested for his crimes, police found seven bodies in the attic and crawl space of his house, with one woman still missing.

A former columnist for the Arts and Leisure Section of the New York Times, Fred Rosen is a veteran true crime and history author of twenty-four published books.
 
A native of Brooklyn, he became a writer at about 1 a.m. one night in 1977 at University of Southern California’s film school. Earlier that morning, his editing professor, Ken Robinson, who later edited the film Purple Rain, challenged him. “You’re supposed to be a writer,” he said after sharply criticizing a script Rosen wrote for the class.

Outdoing "Jack the Ripper" and not knowing it!

"Body Dump" by Fred Rosen, ISBN 0-7860-1133-5 (ppb), Pinnacle Books 2001 - is a 303 page disquisition by determined writer (6 books) about the life and times of serial killer Kendall L. Francois of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. An additional 16 pages of photos show the victims, crime scene, killer, and forensic principals. A final 9 pages cover some confounding legalities of premature guilty pleading in capital crimes.
The book's presentation is interesting, appearing firstly to be jumping around but the reader discovers this is a likely ploy paralleling the confused thought processes or machinations of Kendall who forgot about one of the eight victims he'd killed and put in his attic. Kendall's M.O. was static, his signature (bathing) intriguing, but his motive elusive and not a factor in conviction, certainly a rarity in itself.
We have opportunity to witness the downside of sovereignty and non-cooperative jurisdiction of Town, City, State and Federal policing authorities until a serial killer is suspected. Rosen took some potshots as: "Law enforcement's continued reliance on the outmoded, ineffectual and unproved FBI serial killer organized and disorganized modality does nothing to help in catching these criminals." But, is this fair game when there are no bodies and no crime scenes?
All in all, I found the book interesting as a recital of an otherwise incongruous story of a killer stashing bodies (unbeknownst to family) in the attic and basement of his parent's home near the Vassar and Marist Colleges in Town and City of Poughkeepsie. Do take the time to read it.

Quick True Crime Read on Poughkeepsie Serial Killer

In BODY DUMP, readers are introduced to Kendall Francois, an African American serial killer, who killed at least five of Poughkeepsie, New York's prostitutes. Aside from the fact that Francois goes against the standard serial killer ethniticity, his modus operandi also included storing the bodies in the attic and crawl space of his home; despite the fact that he lived with his parents and younger sister (all who claimed to not know of the stored corpses).

This was an interesting and quick read into the crimes of a serial killer. The one disappointing aspect, however, was the limited information provided into the background of Francois. While readers are provided information about his adulthood (mostly following high school), details of his family life were little. Of course, this could be attributed to the fact that the Francois family chose to enter into seclusion following the arrest of Kendall.

This is an interesting read. I would recommend it to fans of the true crime genre.

I liked it because I come from the area. For those who don't, it could use a couple of maps in the front like one of Poughkeepsie and one of Dutchess County. Maybe highlighting places like Troop K, Vassar College, Fulton Avenue, etc.

About the Author
Nic Beech is Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Professor of Management at the University of St Andrews, Vice Chair of the British Academy of Management and Lead Fellow of the UK Advanced Institute of Management. He has undertaken significant projects funded by the ESRC, EU and industry partners and his five previous books include Human Resource Management: A Concise Analysis (with E. McKenna, 2008) and Managing Creativity (with B. Townley, Cambridge, 2010). He presents regularly to professional and business executives and teaches at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Robert MacIntosh is Chair in Strategic Management at the University of Glasgow Business School. He has worked with a range of FTSE-listed businesses, large public organizations and many small to medium sized firms. In recent years, he has co-chaired the Action Research SWG of the European Group for Organization Studies, been a member of Council for the British Academy of Management and has been appointed as a visiting professor at Edinburgh Business School. Originally trained as an engineer, he has over twenty years experience of teaching and researching change management.

Certainly well written, yet to point that some of ...

Certainly well written, yet to point that some of the sentence structure seem to be overly complex or just too grammatically correct to the chagrin of my students who are ESL (English as a Second Language) students in Hong Kong. They found the book rather hard to comprehend on many occasions.
Vignette kind of in-text examples would also help in the illustration of of concepts discussed. There could also be an emphasis or a lead-in chapter on the fact that managing change in the conext of the book is mainly on the implemenation (i.e. operational strategies, latching onto the popular book of Exploring Strategy by Jonhson and Scholes) of strategic plans. This last point is the way we make use of the textbook in in the second part of our two-semester course.
