More about management than leadership....

Maybe when this book was written (in the late 1970s) people didn't distinguish management from leadership. I read this book as part of a class on Christian leadership, and though this is recognized as a classic, it was not as good as several other books in that regard.

If you're looking at leadership from a Christian perspective you might consider: Transforming Leadership: Jesus' Way of Creating Vision, Shaping Values & Empowering Change, and Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness 25th Anniversary Edition.

However, if you are really interested in developing management skills for use in a Christian organizational context, this might yet be a good book for you. Just remember, this book is a bit dated in some of it's workplace references....

Successfully Integrates Biblical Thought and Secular Theory

Engstrom has written an excellent book on a topic not many have able to accomplish: how to integrate the Bible with secular theory.
Among the important points Engstrom makes include:
1. What biblical leadership is and is not.
2. A true leader must not be driven for the thirst for power.
3. A mark of maturity is the ability to handle conflict.
4. Suggestions on how to improve your attitude and those who follow you.
5. For a leader to excel, he must find other interests outside his job (family, friends, hobbies, etc.).
6. A leader will be effective when he adopts goal-setting and planning as a personal style of life.
7. Using creative problem-solving.
8. A Christian leader must point others to Christ instead of himself.
Read and be encouraged and challenged to become a better leader!

This is a priceless overview of leadership styles, strategies and personality traits. Its real-life examples make it an effective teaching tool for leadership development. Engstrom clearly presents Biblical strategies for improving management and human relations. Every Christian leader should have this book on the shelf.

It shows how one of the world's top Perl authorities brings the language to bear on problems that require communication among computers, showing that you may not have to resort to Java as soon as you may have thought to meet a networking requirement. What's more, Stein doesn't assume you have a lot of Perl expertise. Such an environment creates tremendous opportunities for innovation. Whole new classes of applications are now predicated on the availability of high-bandwidth, always-on connectivity. Interactive games allow players from around the globe to compete on virtual playing fields and the instant messaging protocols let them broadcast news of their triumphs to their friends. New peer-to-peer systems, such as Napster and Gnutella, allow people to directly exchange MP3 audio files and other types of digital content. The SETI@Home project takes advantage of idle time on the millions of personal computers around the world to search for signs of extraterrestrial life in a vast collection of cosmic noise. The ubiquity of the network allows for more earthbound applications as well. With the right knowledge, you can write a robot that will fetch and summarize prices from competitors' Web sites; a script to page you when a certain stock drops below a specified level; a program to generate daily management reports and send them off via e-mail; a server that centralizes some number-crunching task on a single high-powered machine, or alternatively distributes that task among the multiple nodes of a computer cluster. Whether you are searching for the best price on a futon or for life in a distant galaxy, you'll need to understand how network applications work in order to take full advantage of these opportunities. You'll need a working understanding of the TCP/IP protocol--the common denominator for all Internet-based communications and the most common protocol in use in local area networks as well. You'll need to know how to connect to a remote program, to exchange data with that program, and what to do when something goes wrong. To work with existing applications, such as Web servers, you'll have to understand how the application-level protocols are built on top of TCP/IP, and how to deal with common data exchange formats such as XML and MIME. This book uses the Perl programming language to illustrate how to design and implement practical network applications. Perl is an ideal language for network programming for a number of reasons. First, like the rest of the language, Perl's networking facilities were designed to make the easy things easy. It takes just two lines of code to open a network connection to a server somewhere on the Internet and send it a message. A fully capable Web server can be written in a few dozen lines of code. Second, Perl's open architecture has encouraged many talented programmers to contribute to an ever-expanding library of useful third-party modules. Many of these modules provide powerful interfaces to common network applications. For example, after loading the LWP::Simple module, a single function call allows you to fetch the contents of a remote Web page and store it in a variable. Other third-party modules provide intuitive interfaces to e-mail, FTP, net news, and a variety of network databases. Perl also provides impressive portability. Most of the applications developed in this book will run without modification on UNIX machines, Windows boxes, Macintoshes, VMS systems, and OS/2. However, the most compelling reason to choose Perl for network application development is that it allows you to fully exploit the power of TCP/IP. Perl provides you with full access to the same low-level networking calls that are available to C programs and other natively compiled languages. You can create multicast applications, implement multiplexed servers, and design peer-to-peer systems. Using Perl, you can rapidly prototype new networking applications and develop interfaces to existing ones. Should you ever need to write a networking application in C or Java, you'll be delighted to discover how much of the Perl API carries over into these languages.

This Book's Audience Network Programming with Perl is written for novice and intermediate Perl programmers. I assume you know the basics of Perl programming, including how to write loops, how to construct if-else statements, how to write regular expression pattern matches, the concept of the automatic $_ variable, and the basics of arrays and hashes. You should have access to a Perl interpreter and some experience writing, running, and debugging scripts. Just as important, you should have access to a computer that is connected both to a local area network and to the Internet! Although the recipes in Chapter 10 on setting Perl-based network servers to start automatically when a machine is booted do require superuser (administrative) access, none of the other examples require privileged access to a machine.

This book does take advantage of the object-oriented features in Perl version 5 and higher, but most chapters do not assume a deep knowledge of this system. Chapter 1 addresses all the details you will need as a casual user of Perl objects.

This book is a thorough review of the TCP/IP protocol at the lowest level, or a guide to installing and configuring network hubs, routers, and name servers. Many good books on the mechanics of the TCP/IP protocol and network administration are listed in the references in Appendix D. Roadmap This book is organized into four main parts, Basics, Developing Cients for Common Services, Developing TCP Client/Server Systems, and Advanced Topics. Part I, Basics, introduces the fundamentals of TCP/IP network communications.

Chapters 1 and 2, Networking Basics and Processes, Pipes, and Signals, review Perl's functions and variables for input and output, discuss the exceptions that can occur during I/O operations, and use the piped filehandle as the basis for introducing sockets. These chapters also review Perl's process model, including signals and forking, and introduce Perl's object-oriented extensions. Chapter 3, Introduction to Berkeley Sockets, discusses the basics of Internet networking and describes IP addresses, network ports, and the principles of client/server applications. It then turns to the Berkeley Socket API, which provides the programmer's interface to TCP/IP. Chapters 4 and 5, The TCP Protocol and The IO::Socket API and Simple TCP Applications, show the basics of TCP, the networking protocol that provides reliable stream-oriented communications. These chapters demonstrate how to create client and server applications and then introduce examples that show the power of technique as well as some common roadblocks.

Chapter 10, Forking Servers and the inetd Daemon, covers the common type of TCP server that forks a new process to handle each incoming connection. This chapter also covers the UNIX and Windows inetd daemons, which allow programs not specifically designed for networking to act as servers. Chapter 11, Multithreaded Applications, explains Perl's experimental multithreaded API, and shows how it can greatly simplify the design of TCP clients and servers. Extraordinarily useful book

This book, replete with code, is one of the most useful resources I've come across. There aren't just code snippets here -- there are complete and useful programs, with explanations for each line of code. These line-by-line explanations not only make the code crystal clear, but it demonstrates how you can adapt the code to suit your specific need.
It discusses the esoteric topics such as threading, sockets, parsing binary email attachments, and more in a very understandable and open fashion. It also discusses existing modules and their "hidden" usefulness (Hint: Net::Telnet can be used to SSH). The author is to be commended on his ability to make these cryptic topics understood.
When I first flipped through Network Programming with Perl, I immediately found the solution to a problem I was having for the previous few days. A few more moments, I saw solutions to problems that associates were having. It's not very often a single book can do that without a thorough reading, but this one came through brilliantly.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone serious about taking their Perl expertise to the next level.

Great coverage of network programming if you use perl

This book has excellent coverage of forking, multithreading, multiplexing, and non-blocking IO. Good coverage of this material is hard to find. Most books just concentrate on specific protocols such as POP, IMAP, FTP, SMTP, etc. This book also covers that material, but unlike other books, this one will actually start you off understanding sockets, pipes and signals rather than just showing you how to to use a bunch of libs. There is plenty of example source code here too.

Everything you need to know on Network Programming

This book has been in my wish list for pretty long time, and before I actually buy it decided to check it out of my school's library. Enjoyment started at the first chapters of the book that I read in the library's caffeteria. The book definitely covers all the aspects of the Network Progamming, not only with Perl, but in general as well.
In the first chapters of the book, Lincoln Stein makes good use of such OO modules as IO::File and IO::Socket to demostrate that difference between local file operations and remote network programming isn't that much different at all ( at least in Perl ).
Chapter 2 shows you several applications that are built on pipes. The best thing about the chapter was the signals part, where L. Stein shows examples, catching all sorts of signals that your progam receives and reacts accordingly. One example was reacting to pressing of CTRL+C sequence of keys to terminate the progam.
I would call Chapter 3 the heart of the book, since it goes over Berkeley Sockets, the base for Network progamming in most systems, no matter what progamming language you tend to prefer. Chapter 4 tells you all you need about TCP Protocol. Shows several examples as well. Goes over Adjusting Socket options, and their uses.
Chapter 5 is not anything newer supposing you've been following all the pervious chapters. Untill this chapter, L. Stein demonstrates the coding using much low level Socket API. here Lincoln starts using IO::Socket's Object Oriented Interface for its handy functionalities that enable writing Networking applications more relieving.
Chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9 takes you through writing several commong network clients such as SMTP/mailing clients, Telnet, FTP clients. Also provides their complete source codes in case you just feel likek copying them. Chapter 9 gets into the most fun part: LWP and HTML/XML Parsing. Spends good 50 pages on those. Very exciting indeed!
The rest of the book (another half) is dedicated for writing Server applications, which I haven't read. I am sure the rest is as exciting as it's been up to this point. But no matter what, I am greatefull to the book for such an exciting and informative coverage of the topics. It's worth every penny that you spend on it. Buy it!

Becoming Women of Purpose

Ruth Barton's study is an excellent resource for Christian women of all ages and stages. She guided me through a personal and scriptural discovery of God's unique purpose for my life using a pleasant variety of old and new testament teachings along with probing questions on my real life experiences, feelings, and beliefs. This study is similar in format to those by author/teacher Cynthia Heald. Unlike other studies of this type, Ms. Barton soaks in scripture passages to communicate her points; I never got the sense that we were skipping around the Bible. I particularly enjoyed the studies of Esther and Moses, developing a personal purpose statement, and discovering the value God sees in my life circumstances.
I did the study on my own, and found many mornings I couldn't wait to get to it! I completed it in less than a month, and plan to use the materials in a group setting this fall. The guide also has a strong Leader's Section in the back that undergirds every chapter with selective "deeper dive" support.

Population genetics seeks to understand the causes of genetic differences within and among species, and molecular biology provides a rich repertoire of techniques for identifying these differences. The book is organized as a user's guide to population genetics. Chapter 1 starts with the basic concepts of molecular genetics and examines the principal methods by which DNA (or proteins) can be manipulated to reveal genetic polymorphisms in any population. Chapter 1 also includes the principles of population genetics underlying the organization of genetic variation in populations, with special emphasis on random mating, linkage equilibrium and disequilibrium, and inbreeding. Chapter 2 examines the evolutionary processes that can change allele frequencies, including mutation, migration and population admixture, natural selection of various types, and random genetic drift. This chapter also includes an elementary explanation of the diffusion equations as used in population genetics. Chapter 3 is the core of molecular population genetics. It includes the analysis of nucleotide polymorphism and diversity based on coalescents, patterns of change in nucleotide and amino acid sequences with special emphasis on codon usage bias and amino acid polymorphisms, inferences based on comparisons of levels of polymorphism and divergence, molecular phylogenetics, and the population dynamics of transposable elements. Chapter 4 focuses on complex traits whose expression is influenced by multiple genes and environmental factors. It examines genetic effects on the components of phenotypic variation and the correlations between relatives, the evolution of quantitative traits in natural populations, and comes full circle with the use of molecular polymorphisms and candidate genes in the identification of quantitative trait loci underlying complex inheritance. As for mathematical rigor, while there are some equations, the emphasis is on explanation rather than derivation. Only elementary algebra is necessary to follow most of the material, but a familiarity with basic calculus is helpful for understanding diffusion equations, Poisson random fields, and complex threshold traits. Mathematical symbols are used consistently throughout the book, and when results from the theoretical literature are quoted, the original symbols have been changed as necessary to maintain consistency. Modern population genetics makes liberal use of acronyms-these are all defined in the text, and their interrelations and implications are discussed. For ease of reference there is a glossary of acronyms and other common abbreviations used in population genetics.

About the Author
Daniel L. Hartl is a Professor of Biology in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with James F. Crow, then did postdoctoral work with Spencer W. Brown at the University of California-Berkeley. Prior to taking on his current role at Harvard in 1993, Dr. Hartl held teaching positions at the University of Minnesota-St. Paul, Purdue University, the University of Zurich, and the Washington University School of Medicine. In addition to Principles of Population Genetics, Third Edition (written with Andrew G. Clark and also published by Sinauer Associates), he has authored or co-authored several other genetics books. Dr. Hartl served as President of the Genetics Society of America in 1989. His research interests include population genetics, molecular evolutionary genetics, and molecular genetics.

Good for general information

I studied population genetics as a graduate student, and decided to get this book, literally as a "primer" to the field of population genetics. I refer to it every now and then, and would recommend it for those who want to get a general and very broad overview of population genetics. As I read a lot of primary literature, I think it would have been more helpful if the book cited more references, or active research in the field. Overall, though, a very nice concise book on population genetics. It definitely serves as a primer, rather than an overall tell-all, or comprehensive tale of the field.

Forget the Rest and Go With the Best!

I am a professional humorist and storyteller. For years I have struggled with the need to continuously develop and deliver new material. I have read dozens of books on the subjects of humor and joke writing, but The Serious Guide to Joke Writing by Sally Holloway is by far the best.

Ms Holloway writes in a conversational and engaging style. Her prose is concise and boy, does she ever deliver! The chapters on Joke-Webs, the Hadron Joke Collider and the Surrealist Inquisition are gold mines. A longtime user of mind mapping, I was immediately able to put the joke web and Hadron Joke Collider ideas to use with excellent results. Not to worry though, if you are not familiar with mind mapping Ms Holloway's clear instructions and trouble-shooting guides will have you using both techniques in no time if you are willing to put in the work. The Surrealist Inquisition is proving to be a challenging technique, but one that I will spend more time with since I can easily see its ability to help come up with wildly funny ideas.

The book flows, pulling you along and guiding you through each exercise. If you are interested in writing jokes, humorous essays, monologues, or simply adding some punch to your presentations, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Maybe there are some cultural differences

I'll start with the positive.
The author lays out some very helpful joke writing methods, most notably the "joke web". These won't write the jokes for you, but they will give you lots of very relevant information to create jokes. The book was easy to follow, and a overall a good quick read.

Negative.
I think perhaps because the author is British and I'm American, there may be a bit of a cultural gap in regards to what is funny. For example, the first chapter is about how to construct puns. I will admit that occasionally a pun is funny, but for the most part they should be avoided. She keeps coming back to puns throughout the book, which for me was a bit like literary nails on a chalkboard. I basically took her methods and removed the bits regarding puns, and that worked better for me. Also, I thought this book was a tad overpriced. I bought it new for $18, I think given the length of the book something closer to $12 would have been more fair.

Reasonable Choice for Teaching Math

It's unfortunate that the other reviews are mostly attacks on Common Core, rather than actual reviews of the usefulness of this particular book in teaching math. The exact methods and problems used are created by textbook companies, so if you don't like them, hate on Addison-Wesley. Common Core just says what students should be able to do by the end of a grade, not HOW they must do it. (And, most states already had standards in place before Common Core, you just didn't realize it until they had a fancy name).

So I'that said, ll attempt to provide some useful information about THIS book.

Background:

We bought this book primarily because our school district uses the enVision curriculum, and I thought it would be easier for my daughter to transition from the 2nd grade in-school math curriculum to doing the 3rd math curriculum at home if we were using the familiar system. I also got a teacher's manual (on CD) and some games-or-something (also on CD), but we've never actually needed to use them because the student textbook provides decent explanation.

What's in the Book:

The curriculum for 3rd grade has 20 topics, each of which contains 4-10 lessons around a theme, such as Adding Whole Numbers (topic 2) or Solids and Shapes (topic 10) up through Dividing with 1-Digit Numbers (topic 19).

Each separate lesson begins with a short explanation of the concept the lesson is based on which explains the underlying concept, and shows how the answer to the sample problem is derived. It's usually very graphical. There are then usually 4-5 "Guided Practice" problems which are intended for the instructor to lead the child through, or discuss together. The last 2 of these are often asking the student to explain in their own words a key concept of the lesson, and perhaps a word problem. This is followed by a bunch of Independent Practice problems where the student works some equations, and then a set of word problems from which the student must derive the equation to be solved. Usually there are 1 or 2 problems that require a written explanation.

Once per topic there's usually an entire lesson devoted to problem solving. Each topic also has an assessment with 10-12 problems and then a page of reteaching problems.

I've found the lessons to be easy to use. It may, however, be useful to note that (a) I studied a lot of math myself in school; (b) I've taught 6th grade math using the "new" methodologies, so I have a sense where this is all going; and (c) I've formally studied the latest ideas on the teaching of math. So, in a nutshell, I may be coming at this from a different perspective than others.

Some noteworthy points:
* The assessments are really very short. I'd like them to have more problems. (Perhaps more are available on the teacher's manual which I have not accessed.) Also, the reteaching materials are pretty skimpy. Both of these issues could be helped by actually buying the workbook, which we did not do. We extended lessons by using Khan Academy online; this would also be a good source for any necessary reteaching if you were using this book.

* Also, spiraling curriculum is nice, but it does make it so that topics seem to jump around a lot. This wasn't a problem for my daughter, who actually liked jumping around, but might be for children who struggle more with math. But it also leads to the feeling like you're not going into depth in any one topic before moving on. I assume the idea is to build greater depth on each pass through an area, but since I don't have the 2nd or 4th grade curriculums, I can't really see the whole picture.

* It's worth noting that some lessons ask the students to make use of manipulatives which are not included with the textbook. We have made do without these or substituted toys we already own (fortunately we own a lot of blocks). There has been a fair amount of drawing of pictures, but comparatively far less than in other curriculums (IME, not as much as in Math Expressions). I'm personally a fan of diagrams and drawings to illustrate concepts, though they do take more time to complete than equations.

I could see us buying and using the 4th grade curriculum. It's not a bad curriculum at all. But after some research, I've decided we may switch to the Math in Focus version of Singapore Math for 4th grade math, because I've read it goes into more depth and requires more problem solving.

Great for helping at home.

This is the ideal book for parents or tutors. The work is designed to coordinate with classwork but the pages are different than what the child will get at school. The only problem is the adult will have to find the answers unless they have access to a teacher's manual.
