About the Author
Jack Herris has a long history with aviation. His parents started dating while car-pooling together to North American Aviation during WW2. Jack’s father built P-51s, including parts for the first P-51 Mustang ever built, and his mother built B-25s. In 1971 Jack graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics. He then served as a Naval Aviator, flying P-3B Orion aircraft with VP-46. After leaving the navy he worked in the Laser Fusion Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, then worked in the high tech industry in Silicon Valley. He holds CFI, CFI-I, CFI-ME, ATP, and Learjet type ratings. Jack is a long-time member of the League of WWI Aviation Historians, and before that the Cross & Cockade Society, and has written more than a dozen articles on WWI aircraft published in their quarterly journal, Over the Front and has edited several issues of that journal. He brings insight into these aircraft both from his engineering and military pilot experience. In 1992 he founded Flying Machines Press to publish aviation history books and after publishing a number of titles, sold Flying Machines Press in 2000. He became a repeat offender by starting Aeronaut Books, which published its first two new aviation books in November 2010. For more information, see the website at www.aeronautbooks.com. Another in a great series of WW1 aviation books from Jack Herris!

Although WW1 aviation buffs are most familiar with the Fokker and Junkers monoplane fighters and prototypes, this book does an excellent job of examining several other companies' lesser known (and less successful) monoplane designs. The book design, photographs, commentary and specifications are all first rate. Although there is some duplication of information from other books in the centennial series, this is highly recommended for anyone interested in Great War German aviation.

Another great publication from this published and author on World War I combat aircraft with great photos, text on the history of these unique fighter, attack aircraft and bombers, scale drawing and color profiles for such a great price on this subject. Recommend highly for the World War I modelers and Aviation Historians.

Gently inspiring

I took this lovely book out of its package only a few minutes ago and first was intrigued by how the cover felt. It's soft. The photos inside are a muted palette of inspirational shots with closeups of stitches and weaves, light and shadow. Kantha and boro are discussed, along with contributions from various artists in the slow stitch field. I'm rushing to write this review because the book has made me (quietly) excited to explore my own handwork, but also because I have to go work at a quilt show today.

This is a pleasantly inspiring book, accessible but not academically in-depth--and that's not a complaint. I have many more academically directed books in my textile library so this is a refreshing book to have on hand. A nice primer for those who are exploring hand work as well as those who already enjoy it.

Excellent Book!

Lovely, wonder filled book. I am a long time reader of the blog this writer has maintained over a period of years. The blog was very good but this book is better than I could have hoped for. Claire has a unique way of touching the world through the art of stitch. Her words make us stop and think about our impact on the world and how we could make that better. The illustrations in this book are tactile and evocative - they make me want to put little stitches on every garment I own. The world needs more of Claire and her ideas and less of mass produced stuff. If you are trying to express yourself through stitch and dye then this book may inspire you to great things (possibly great small things). Hopefully this talented author will write more and leave a stitch trail for the rest of us to follow.

Beautiful images. Wonderful philosophical questions of production of "handmade" goods.

This is an art book discussing philosophy with a little 'how to' for dyeing with plants and over-dying commercial, recycled fabric, very old linen fabric, lace and thread, as well as new floss & threads in a very simple process. (Basically fill a canning jar with X and water, insert Y's plant's roots and leaves, then add small fabric, thread, floss, etc and set in sunny window with the top on for z's days or weeks.) Anyone who is very committed to acid-free, exacting, and archival processes may be disappointed.
However, this book is fantastic, gorgeous, and put together beautifully as almost all of Batsford's books. It has given me some starting places to think through several questions rolling around in my head about what has been pulling me away from the sewing machine and toward handwork in my art. It has great photos of current fiber installations, plus close ups of beautiful handwork with collaged pieces incorporating old textiles with new. What I found the most fascinating is all the different incredible textures one can make by repeating the same stitches in different densities over an area of layered, old soft fabrics that have been already sewn, used and loved-possibly for a few generations.
And that's just the first 1/2 of the book, as I've not finished yet. I can slam through bedtime kindle novels embarrassingly fast. But this book not only encourages slow thoughtful stitching, but of slow thoughtful reading and thinking as well. It would be a shame to skim the images and ooh and ahh and then relegate it to a bookcase somewhere. I've not had another hour since pulling the book out of the box to sit in a comfortable chair with good lighting and a cup of tea/coffee/wine and finish the book.
There is also some discussion about the new do it yourself and handmade sale website boom philosophies. It makes me wonder if we defeat the process by being caught producing 10 pieces of widgets as fast as possible to get out to 7 different customers ASAP. This is one of my favorite books bought in a while.

Rabbit Production

This is the newest edition of a classic in raising rabbits commercially. This edition has color photographs that prove to be very useful. It contains practical useful and up-to-date information that simply cannot be found elsewhere. Not a how-to book for pet rabbit owners, but a serious manual for producing high quality healthy rabbits in an economical manner. I would not attempt to raise rabbits commercially without this "bible" on the bookshelf.

Very Helpful companion book

I just checked this book out from the local library and after skimming through it, marking what I want to go back and read in detail, I am convinced that this is a book that I can't be without! This book has TONS of detailed information, including several chapters on the genetics of rabbits. It is the first book that I have found that just doesn't gloss over rabbits as a whole, but actually gets down to the nitty gritty. There's a lot of detailed information about the diseases, how to have a successful rabbitry (if that is your goal), food guidelines, the importance of vitamins, etc. Do yourself a favor: get ahold of this book!

About the Author
Mary E. Woods received her MSW from the Columbia University School of Social Work. She recently retired after ten years as Adjunct Associate Professor at Hunter College School of Social Work in New York City and over twenty years as an independent clinical practitioner with individuals, couples, families, and groups. In addition to her private practice, Ms. Woods had an extensive practice of consultation to other clinicians and with several social agencies. She has served as a field instructor, training director, and program developer during her seven year tenure in a family service agency, and she planned and directed a store-front counseling service to clients who had difficulty traveling to the agency’s main facility. She is the author or co-author of several articles and chapters, including “Psychosocial Theory and Social Work Treatment” in Francis J. Turner’s Social Work Treatment, and “Personality Disorders” in Francis J. Turner’s Adult Psychopathology II (due in 1999).

Florence Hollis was the sole author of the first two editions of Casework: A Psychosocial Therapy. She did her undergraduate work at Wellesley College, received her master’s degree from Smith College School of Social Work in 1931, and earned her doctorate from Bryn Mawr School of Social Work and Social Research in 1947. Through the depression years, she worked at family agencies in Philadelphia and in Cleveland, where she taught part-time at Western Reserve University. She was the editor of the Journal of Social Casework during the 1940s, and in 1947, she joined the teaching staff at Columbia University School of Social Work. While at Columbia, she developed her typology of casework procedures, which became the basis for ongoing and rigorous research into worker-client communication and the casework process. Over the course of her career, she published three books and over forty articles on casework. As a part of her busy life, Dr. Hollis saw clients on a regular basis; she considered it essential to the successful performance of her other professional roles.

For many years the classic Woods and Hollis text has been required reading for graduate students of social work at the Hunter College School of Social Work. The updated Fifth Edition is even more useful than previous editions in its in-depth and detailed explanations of modern social work practice. This book addresses clients' concrete practice needs, environmental deficits and pressures, and personal and relationship dilemmas. Seldom in the literature is the field of social work firmly grounded in its own special knowledge and traditions, described so fully that the reader can clearly distinguish it from other helping professions. Recently, when asked about which of many professional writings they found most helpful, eight-five percent of a class of first year social work graduate students consistently identified Casework as particularly valuable in illuminating knowledge essential to their education for social work; they noted the text's clear explications of the unique history, values, missions and rick accumulation of practice experience-and the complexity of the interactions among these-that must be mastered to train for a career in this profession. Students have further indicated that the book is extremely helpful in identifying the theories underlying social work practice and how these theories can be specifically applied in work with a broad range of clients, presenting a vast array of quandaries and difficulties, seen in many settings.
Clear explanations of techniques (the "how-tos" of practice)aid new social workers in developing skills of listening and intervening. The importance of "mutuality" between clients and workers in emphasized. The text explains how clients-individuals, couples and families-can be helped to claim their own strengths and become empowered to resolve dilemmas, make decisions and choose changes. From the outset, the reader learns about social work's dual focus: on people and their environments and on the interactions and "fit" between them. The book describes and illustrates how people's lives affect and are affected by external conditions. Straightfoward discussions and a wide variety of case examples demonstrate how inner and outer phenomena are in constant interaction and inseparably intertwined, and how social work interventions have to be tailored to focus on those systems most accessible to change.
The four chapters on family and couple treatment introduce beginning students to multi-person interviewing and are often studied intensively by second year and post-graduate students who are preparing to gain further understanding and skill in these modalities.

I have been teaching graduate social work for fifteen years and have yet to discover a text about psychosocial casework that surpasses this revised classic in its clarity, depth, thouroughness, and wisdom. The basic psychosocial orientation and typology of casework procedures defined by Florence Hollis remains intact, yet the text, as a whole, is substantially updated by Mary Woods, whose fluid prose is rich in clinical detail, articulate, and aimed at what the practitioner yearns to know and needs to know. As an experienced clinician, I still turn frequently to the chapters on couple and family treatment where protocols for navigating these exceptionally tricky modalities are clearly presented. In chapter 16, for example, Mary Woods develops a typology of "relationships and problems" detailing 12 patterns of couple conflict that, in itself, serves as a primer for the novice practitioner. Approaches to nontraditional couples (premarital couples, unmarried pairs, cross-cultural relationships, and gay and lesbian couples) are amply discussed as well with sensitive consideration of social differentials in power experienced by men and women and by couples of color. The text consistently partializes assessment and techniques of intervention so that one can read and assimilate complex clinical procedures in bite size pieces. Heuristics are laced throughout the text, giving one a feeling of personal guidance. The fifth edition of Casework is a treasure chest for students and teachers of social work and the helping professions to dig into time and time again.

As a graduate social work clinician of 15 years, I turn to Casework: A Psychosocial Therapy to renew my understanding, hone my skills, and refresh myself on the particulars of treatment techniques and procedures involved in individual, family, and couple work. There are few books that blend theory and the "how-to" of clinical practice in the ways that this book does. It is an exceptionally clear text. This book reminds the clinician of the importance of listening closely to what is important to clients as opposed to imposing upon them what we think should be important to them. Respect for the client is foremost, and this book underlines this and other values which represent the best our profession offers. It is the definitive test in psychosocial casework, and I heartily recommend it to others.

Jack Levinis the Brudnick professor of sociology and criminology at Northeastern University, where he directs its Brudnick Center on Conflict and Violence. He has written numerous books and articles about hate and violence, has been featured in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Boston Globe, USA Today, and numerous radio and television news programs and talk shows. He lives in Boston, Massachusetts. Jack McDevitt is a leading academic expert on hate crimes in America. He directs the Institute for Research on Race and Justice at Northeastern University. Just Don't Bother

This book is garbage, all of the information is ancient and irrelevant to an issue as enigmatic and shape-shifting depending on context, egos, identity, et cetera. I read this for a class and was thoroughly insulted by the content; it was as if Levin and McDervitt decided that research really just wasn't important anymore. While this book certainly doesn't claim to be scholarly work, it just isn't even worth the paper its printed on.

These two supposed "experts" are also flagrant apologists and their ignorance of structural violence, systemic oppression systems, intersecting identities, or even just transphobic violence is astonishing to say the least. You are better off reading Audrey Smedley's Race in North America and watching "Black and Gold."

Interesting read

Despite the fact I had to read this for my hate crimes class, I actually enjoyed it because of the interesting research behind hate crimes and cases studies that are presented. The chapters aren't too long and easy to comprehend. A recommended read not just for criminal justice or criminologist students, but for anyone interested in the subject of hate crimes.

Another excellent book from this author

Another excellent book from this author. Now with a more straightforward style and easier reading. The sad truth of individual investing is revealed in the Preface, p. xv, "Successful investors need for abilities" and "...as few as one person in ten thousand...has the full skill set." The theme is the same as his other books: the future is unpredictable; diversify to reduce risk; choose a mix of investments such as stocks and bonds; stick with it through fluctuations in value.
