All GRE takers should buy this. Now. And rush the shipping.

I just finished taking the GRE last month - I had only 3 weeks to study because of an administrative glitch, so I needed a good resource and some quick shipping (thanks, Amazon). For my overall study guide, I picked Princeton Review based on previous use of their products and the overall positive reviews, and I was generally very pleased with it and its ability to help me work through the entire test prep matter in 3 weeks. That said, I could not have achieved my verbal score of 770 without this book from Barron's. I'm actually not sure I would have come closer than 700-720....it's that good. A reviewer for the Princeton Review general guide recommended this Barron book and I must second that review and all other five-star reviews here. The word list is EXTREMELY comprehensive and the exercises and 10-word unit breakdown really help you learn. I wound up going unit by unit. For each one, I'd read all the words and definitions and identify the ones I didn't know (or didn't "really" know...maybe I had a hunch but not a clear sense). For those unknown words, I wrote them down in a notebook, with a definition in my own words and a sentence I made up myself (Barron's also has sentences which will help you understand the word better but I think making up your own definitions and sentences and then writing them down helps it sink in). After working through all 80 units (whew) I turned to the notebook list of "trouble" words and basically quizzed myself and had others quiz me in multiple rounds, where in each round I highlighted the words I still didn't know, until that list got smaller and smaller and then disappeared. It was a lot to do in three weeks but Barron's really helped me focus. Seriously - get this book and you will maximize your score. For people like me whose verbal and essay scores are most important, this book is really worth the time it takes to work through. Get it! Get it now! Good luck, everyone!

Awesome Prep for the GREs

When I was studying for the GREs, I became a crazy person. It is difficult to improve your verbal score, so I knew that I needed an extra study aid to memorize the necessary vocabulary words. I decided to purchase this book in particular because of the great reviews. Needless to say, the reviews were accurate and the book was amazing!!
I would go through a chapter and make an index card for each word that I did not recognize. I used colored index cards (green for positive words, red for negative, etc.) and on the back I divided it into four squares (short definition, synonyms, antonyms, and an illustration of the word...it sounds crazy but it worked!). The end of each chapter included several exercises for the new terms (matching, true/false, and filling in the blanks). I found this extremely helpful; it was engaging and stimulating, which is important when you are studying mundane vocabulary terms. I completed the entire book and managed to memorize the unfamiliar words. I believe that my success on the verbal section of the GREs (I managed to get a 162!) are due, in part, to the activities and words found in this book.
As a poor college student, the price of this book was AWESOME. That along with the fact that it was super helpful makes it a great purchase!

Helpful in getting those few extra words

The layout of this book is pretty efficient for reading words and seeing them in context. The drills after every ten words also helps cement them in place. I only had two weeks before the exam so I had to read large chunks at a time. This approach probably hindered my ability to absorb some of it as I would start drifting while reading. After going over the 800 words, I only had time to scan the 300 roots. I strongly recommend that if you do decide to use this book, you give yourself enough time to go over the 800 words and the 300 roots. In fact, if I had to do it over again, I'd make sure I got through the roots before tackling the words.

Having said all that, the only complaint that I have is that as a Christian, I started to grow weary of reading numberless passages that either stated or implied that I am a rube for believing that the Bible is true.

These sections are then connected through discussions of the relationship of size and shape, adaptations, distribution patterns, behavior, and diversity of life. Since the emphasis is on patterns rather than individual species, each chapter has cross-references to related topics. For example, tree-related topics such as leaf shape, treelines, and fall colors, are all discussed in different chapters even though they are related. Leaf shape is associated with trees as organisms, and therefore is in Chapter 2: Trees; treelines are most associated with mountains, so their description is in Chapter 8: Mountains; fall colors apply more broadly to forests than to individual trees, and they are discussed in Chapter 9,Forests.
Approximately 500 color photographs help make the more than 200 patterns apparent and recognizable for readers, and each pattern is accompanied by a detailed description and a brief list of sources. The book is designed to invite browsing, and readers will gain a rich ecological perspective and insight. Unique nature guide

This handbook is unlike any other nature guide, instead of the usual book which is limited to a single aspect of nature, Ernest Williams has collected 227 descriptions of his observations in the field over the past several decades. The topics are wide ranging, with five general themes: relationship of size and shape, adaptations, distributional patterns, behavior and diverstiy of life. It is organized in three chapters: plants, animals and habitats. The topics are interesting little morsels, 1-2 pages each, illustrated by 500 excellent photos. It makes great bedside or bathroom reading! But I read most of the book on a day of travel. This will be a great addition to any nature observer's library.

Original, intelligent, entertaining approach to nature writing

A first-rate, fun, informative, beautifully designed book.

Long version:
It seems difficult to find books about the life sciences written for a general audience that are both substantive and fun to read. I often come home from a walk or a hike (or a movie) wanting to read more about what I just saw. But much nature writing seems to be either overly abstract, philosophical, and memoir-y -- or set up like a catalog, with small square pictures next to small square descriptions of individual animals or plants without any explanation of how they relate to each other. I start out all excited to learn something, and before I know it I'm overwhelmed and bored.

This book, on the other hand, has engaging short discussions of major themes (protective coloration, nest design, sand dune formation) with a good mix of abstract (how a process works) and concrete (examples from the plant or animal world). It has the kind of fun factoids you like to tell your friends (how many earthworms are crawling around the average acre of land, why animals' eyes glow in the dark). The photos are small enough to keep the price down but large enough to be attractive, and each is well chosen to illustrate a point in the text.

Above all, the book focuses on the interactions *between* species (for example, sea otters, kelp, and sea urchins) rather than listing each species as if it were a vase standing alone on a shelf in a museum. It is divided into three sections: plants, animals, and habitats. Details are judiciously chosen to keep the picture manageable for the beginner or lay person. I've never seen a book structured quite this way, and I thought it was a fantastic format for introducing complex subject matter to a general audience. It's not at all sentimental and it doesn't push a point of view on you, but it leaves you with a sense of the magnificence of nature. Three cheers. Well done.

Another chapter in the gorgeous Druuna saga. Eleuteri Serpieri is a star at his art and one only wishes he would treat us to more of his superb artwork showing his profound knowledge of the human body. Usual narrative about quite interesting issues about consciouness and hybrid cyborg technology, but the outstanding feature is the quality of the drawings. Druuna is a dream as an idealised lover-woman-whore....Good stuff!
